Disappointed with PCGS's 5 Oz ATB

I was quite disappointed when I purchased the 5 oz set of ATB PCGS GEM BU. The Grand Canyon has several scratches on the coin itself. I don't believe that PCGS could possibly overlook this and call it a GEM. It may be BU, but a GEM, THEY BETTER LOOK AT THE MEANING oF gem!

I believe all gem BU submission go through the robo-grader.

I thought that the coins which didn't have MS # grades were labeled as "CHOICE" BU,,,,,, not GEM BU?image
    GrandAm :)
  • Most (not all) PCGS GEM BU pucks out there are coins that were submitted through the bulk program. PCGS grades the MS69+'s and slabs all the rest as GEM BU. I think they have have graded 68's for one bulk dealer. So basically "PCGS GEM BU" means anything less than MS69.

Maybe they're "Premium Select" BU image

I always thought that anything above MS65 is considered GEM BU.

Keep in mind that even a gem coin (MS65) has contact marks. On a coin the size of the pucks, they're going to be much bigger and more obvious, especially with the rather reflective surfaces, which do a poor job masking marks the way satiny lustre does on most moderns.

Adriana - you have to show me that scratched hockey puck. I gotta see what qualifies as gem....

I wonder if these are covered under the PCGS grading guarantee?

I think the mint used a "robo-grinder" on most of the ATB's.

  • An MS65 grade (Gem BU) on these pucks is a low grade. Significant contact marks should be expected.
