Am I the only one that thinks non-high relief Saints look rather blah, no matter the grade?

After looking at a high relief, the others just don't get me that excited.
For some reason they just look too flat and the grades, for some reason, almost appear
to be 1 to 2 points higher than they would for other coins with the same amount of blemishes.
I had one in 64 and was thinking it looked more like a 63 or high 62.
Even some on coin facts and other places where the pics are good, ones in 67 or 66 just
seem to have a lot of marks.

What am I missing here?

Don't know -- there are few coins as eye appealing as a totally fresh Saint in 65 or 66.
Maybe the $10 Indian can give a Saint a run for its money in this condition.

I had been looking for a with motto variety for my type set until just the other day. I had wanted a 1908, but settled on this one as it is my mom's birthyear. Her birthday is coming up 4/20. I did pickup a 1908 with motto $10 Indian though. image

Sure, it ain't no gooroo or BillJones-grade equal, but my mom can't see worth a sh_t anyway.

edit to remove the minus 100 ref!

ed.2 - that 1908 came in today, here 'tis...

Confused. You don't like the design or you don't like how they're graded.

    What's your preference, 3cN?

Both. The design is good, especially the high relief. I think it lost something on the non-high reliefs though, but the grading has me baffled.

I'm not saying the Saint is a dog by any means. What I do think is that the high reliefs are outstanding and that
compared to them, the non-high reliefs seem to have lost a "little" of the wow factor.

The second issue is the grading.
I am used to seeing what a Peace or Morgan look like in 66 & 67.
When I then look at a saint in 66 or 67, I wonder how it got that grade, as a Peace or Morgan with
that many hits would not get a 66 or 67. What is the difference in the way they are graded?
Or is my perception of the grading more likely to be regular and + grading issue?

    Blah, compared to what?

to an attractive 1907 extra high relief or even "regular" high relief? possibly.

compared to just about any other coin design? No, no Blah from me. Saints are pretty compared to almost everything else

Nope, you aren't the only one. I have thought the same for awhile

  • No, not no matter what the grade. I would agree that 1908 double eagles graded AU are not very exciting. If given the choice, I'd take the cash over the coin in that case.

I agree... then again, once you see an ultra high relief, the high reliefs are just a bit flat, too.
