Rack Pack question

So, as I am perusing eBay I am always looking for rack/wax/vending to bust of early to mid 1980s product.
I have a decent idea as to how the collation pattern should look on vending and the Donruss rack packs are 3 sealed wax packs so there shouldnt be any funny stuff going on there.
that being said, on Topps I have seen a lot of different racks and they dont seem to follow much rhyme or reason.
For example is this auction: eBay auction for 10 packs of 85 Topps racks
however there isnt, in the first position, one of the insert cards. Btw, i am not accusing this seller of anything
So, are these legit packs?
Could we perhaps get a visual guide to what was normal for Topps to release as it comes to rack packs? This would help the novice collector to learn what to look for so they do not get taken.

  • Afternoon,

I don't think Topps had a clear rhyme or reason for a lot of there racks in 1985, I have owned, opened and bought/sold lots of 1985 Combo racks, Baseball and Football in the same rack. And have seen numerous racks without the insert card at all, and all three positions (So to say), ect.

  • Great Thread, so i will ask my question here if thats ok.

Where's the best place to pick up sealed rack cases of pre-86 Topps? Steve doesnt have any and eBay is dry.

I know for a fact 1984 Topps Racks have a distinct order to the cards showing on the packs. When I see a pack on ebay that has a Mattingly in it I snag it image

Since I have been building a 1984 Topps graded set. I have bought boxes and cases of racks packs. I bought one box from a guy in NJ on ebay and the box wasn't searched. Guess I got lucky. All the other boxes I have bought are from Steve. I bought a a few 3 box cases from Steve. The only 6 box rack case I bought was from...... (Drum roll) ....... Craigslist! I know I was taking a gamble but it paid off. Plus the price was so cheap. I paid $200 total with s&h. I couldn't pass it up. The case was sealed and I busted the whole case. Was awesome time and awesome fun. I got a bunch of PSA 10s including a couple mattingly psa 10s. I am still sitting on a bunch from that case. Just haven't gotten around to subbing them.

There was a pattern with the 1989 topps -- I know, I knew how to find Gregg Jeffries (what a bust, I have hundreds of cards), so I have to assume there was a pattern with 1985.
