What should I do with these?

AhrensdadAhrensdad Posts: 2,583 ✭✭✭
Quite some time ago I bought a couple common date $5 Indians. Turns out one had an added MM (sent to PCGS before I realized). The other one on closer inspection has clearly been tooled to make it look nicer. By-gones as they say. They are both real, and gold, just worked over. My question is how to dispose of them in a collector safe manner?

Is the best thing to do just hit the obv and rev with a chisel ("cancelling" them) and selling them for melt? I don't want them getting back out into the world where an unsuspecting buyer could be hurt.

Thoughts?

Thanks-
Andrew

Selling them with full disclosure would satisfy your ethical obligation.

What the buyer does with them after that is not your problem and the only way to guarantee that no one would get burned in the future would be to melt them yourself or send em to Gecko for melting. I think he has the capability.

Chiseling the coins or intentionally damaging them before selling, IMO, would not be the right thing to do since someone just might want them for their Dansco or Type collection.

Just smack them with a hammer and then sell them for melt. You may want to first soak the one with the added mintmark in acetone to see if you can remove the mintmark which is sometimes glued on. If you can get the mintmark off, this coin will have collector value and shouldn't be melted.
