NEVER MIND - - I found out what I have here.....

DBSTrader2DBSTrader2 Posts: 3,498 ✭✭✭✭
My Mother-in-Law found a few numismatic items while going thru her drawers in preparation for moving. I don't collect medals, and plan on selling it if it's worth anything and has any market/following, but right now haven't a clue as to exactly what it is, when it was minted, what material it's made out of, etc...........

Can anyone tell by my description below & point me in the right direction? I could scan both sides if someone needs to see it. Otherwise..................

..... it's an Abe Lincoln medal of real heavy brass or bronze, measuring approx. 3 inches in diameter. The obverse has a right-facing profile of Abe, with "Abraham" around the edge on the left behind his head and "Lincoln" on the right in front of him. The reverse has a heavy raised wreath around the entire edge, with the following inside from top to bottom:

INAUGURATED
PRESIDENT
OF THE
UNITED STATES
MARCH 4, 1861
SECOND TERM
MARCH 4, 1865
--- . ---
ASSASSINATED
APRIL 14, 1865

Any help in identifying this would be greatly appreciated!

Never Mind!! I found it rather quickly on the web! :

"2009 Medals from the US Mint
The Abraham Lincoln 3" Bronze medal from the US Mint went on sale in the second quarter of 2009. The purchase price directly from the mint was $38.00. As you can see, the box contains the medal packaged in a plastic bag, a hard plastic holder that snaps together so you can display the medal, and a small card describing the medal.

The medal was minted at the Philadelphia Mint but carries no mint mark. It is made up of 90% copper and 10% zinc. The front of the medal features the portrait of Lincoln. The words "Abraham Lincoln" are on the border on the face of the medal.

The reverse side, designed by George T. Morgan, features an oak and laurel wreath within a pearled ring. Within the wreath is a spray of pine and cedar. It is circled by serpent, tail in mouth. This is the Egyptian symbol of eternity and immortality. The inscription in the wreath reads, "INAUGURATED PRESIDENT OF THE UNITED STATES MARCH 4, 1861. SECOND TERM MARCH 4, 1865. ASSASSINATED APRIL 14, 1865."

I have no idea where the box or holder went, but at least now I have info on what it is, sale price, and that this huge thing is 90% copper!! image

  • There have been several large 3 in. bronze medals like you described issued over the years. The mint did release one just this last year in fact. I am no expert but if you look along the edge there might be an inscription or maker mark. A pic would be great.

That is so odd!!! That's EXACTLY the one I have!! (still unopened in the bag, but missing the box/stand).

I guess they went over like a lead balloon, if they still have them in stock to try selling again......

I wonder what posessed my In-Laws (or someone they knew) to buy it - - they really don't collect coins at all otherwise.......

Thanks, everyone!! You guys are fast & good!! image
