1837 Liberty Seated Dime (Small Date)

I know it's been cleaned, but thoughts on a grade?

I think it's a cool issue because of the empty fields (no stars) on the obverse.

30... the hit below the left knee and the rim dings at 10 o'clock are really distracting.

VF30 details- I'll agree with llafoe- except I somehow overlooked the hit on the knee (which is distracting, now that he mentioned it), and also the rim nicks at 10:00 (which don't bother me so much- I overlooked them, too).

    Guess I'm not very observant.

I like these coins in almost any grade. And I like that one, too, despite the unfortunate knee knock. (The rim chatter I could overlook).

The old cleaning doesn't bother me at all. If I were looking for a coin to slab, this would be one to avoid, obviously, but most of the time I'm NOT looking for something to slab.

Nice VF. Doesn't look cleaned in the pic. The dent below the knee is the only big thing against it.

If that's cleaned, then 95% of all seated material is as well.

While visible to the eyes, those marks don't knock it any lower than VF20 imo. I'd rather have the hits than the typical "brighter" specimen.

Thanks for the feedback... I don't have the coin in hand yet so these are not my photos.

I'm not looking to slab, but more to fill a type set or just to keep as a neat issue (no stars).

My hope is that it's at least a net VF-20 (taking the hits into consideration).

Well, if you got a thumbs-up from Dimeman, I suppose you're doing well. Now let's hear what seateddime has to say on it.

BTW, I don't think mine would slab, either. image

I was thinking precisely the same thing, although I'd probably grade the coin 25 or even 30.

id say its attractive for the grade, the imperfections are expected at that grade level nice 30

I like it and I agree it is market acceptable. It is a great album coin I would leave it as is and save the cash.

I don't interpret that coin as having been cleaned. I also like it and the hit on the knee is trivial.

I'm glad I wasn't the only one that didn't notice the cleaning.
I think it is nicer than most. I'm not a fan of the hit on the knee but it is still a nice coin.

Looks like an acceptable 25 to me. I have always liked the no stars dime and half dime.

May or may not have been cleaned at some point but compared to some I see, this one is very nice.

VF30 and looks original to me. And yes, it does have a few marks, but the no stars coins are always cool to look at.

The coin is solid VF and the color is just fine, are those rim dings at 10:00 on the obverse?

Any change up or down in grade? Thanks!

do these photos look more like thee coin?

    The background seems off light.

I would say the details grade is going up 5 points but now the color is too bright.

If you used auto correct this could happen. If the coin is this light than it was cleaned at somepoint. VF dimes tend to be darker if original IMHO.

I did use "auto correct" in Photoshop. Is that what you mean? I think the coin is slightly darker than this in hand.

If the technical grade goes up 5 points, does that mean VF-25? Thanks!
  • Easily a 25, probably a 30 and I think it slabs. I like it.

I went to a coin show today and although I didn't ask them for an actual grade, two former professional graders gave this specimen the thumbs up--original surfaces!

    Made my day!
  • Sorry but it looks cleaned to me, I hope I am terribly mistaken and you get a technical grade! If so I am also in the VF camp! Good luck!
