Bear, Your wisdom as shared on this forum over the years has made me a better man. I will be praying for you and your family as you continue your journey along the path of life, assuredly with same strength and dignity that you have shown in your posts over the years. While our years in this world are limited, rest assured that our impact on the lives around us will live on beyond our years -- and that is certainly true of you, wise Bear....Mike

Bear, I have not had any type of action or interaction with you other the enjoyment I've had reading your posts. You have been a wealth of inspiration, knowledge, humor and common sense that have graced these boards since long before I was a member. My prayers are with you and Mrs. Bear. I will continue to enjoy reading your posts far into the future.
We do not know each other but your post hit me hard. Like everyone else here, I have enjoyed your posts and thoughts.
My prayers are with you and your family.

I just read this post. Having not been active on the forums for a couple years, I wanted to be sure and chime in. In my almost decade on this forum, I've seen you pass out great advice, tell great stories, and offer heartfelt encouragement to newbies and veterans alike. You've never gotten into it with anyone, and I can't think of a single post where you had anything negative to say.
Since most people's 'jerk factor' is much higher online than in person, I can only imagine that in 'real life' you are truly one hell of a gentleman, and an all around great guy. I bet your good nature has taken you a long way, and been an awesome foundation for other people to lean on when they needed it. I'd bet that many people in your life will have a VERY difficult time being with out you. I'll miss you, and I don't even really know you.
I'm sure you've touched more than a few hearts (and probably broken a couple too).
Here's to you Bear. Here's to you and everyone you've ever loved, anyone who's ever loved you, and anyone that wasn't lucky enough to get the chance.
Maybe one day, if I'm really lucky, I'll find myself in a spot......and I'll remember to ask myself what you might have said or done in the same position.
Bear - When I read your reason for cashing out - it blindsided me as I'm sure it has many others. You seem like one of the good guys, I'm truly sorry to hear about your condition.
For those cancer patients as old as me, (72) I have taken the following steps
1. Selling my house and moving into a senior residence with three meals a day The funds to be placed in a trust for the care of Mrs Bear and myself in a great section of Santa Monica with medical capabilities. It's more like a high class hotel then anything else.
2. Converted assets into cash
3. Purchased a Vanguard Mutual fund that historically provides 4.75% a year in earnings
4. Selected my youngest son as a trustee and provided him with a detailed list of assets as well as various insurance policies as well as key phone numbers and names of key people to contact
5. Updated my will and made specific reference for my trustee to carry out my specific wishes, as to medical care and the appropriate time to stop such care and enter a hospice, If I should be unable to make such decisions or of Mrs Bear is unable or unwilling to do so. This includes durable power of attorney for assets and health care decisions a living will and trust arrangements.
6. Made preparations for my final resting place and how I wish it handled, together with a fund to pay for it. I know this may sound a bit morbid, but the effort is intended to make things easier for my family, as well as provide funds and the appropriate executor to look after Mrs Bear when I am gone.
For all the kind responses from so many kind people, thank you all from the bottom of my heart. I hope to be here bantering with you for years to come, the Good Lord willing.

Dear Wise Old Bear,
If you are reading this from the big Jellystone Park in the sky, looks like $34 was a decent exit after all. Of course, a person can do better if they have the benefit of hindsight.
I never knew the guy, never said a word to him and probably don't remember a word he said...until re-reading this thread. I must admit, I broke down reading this thread from beginning to this point because I have the benefit of hindsight reading it. It's amazing how things that are just "out there" can touch you.
I truly hope that his family is doing well and all went as he had hoped it would. Wow! what a reminder of of what is TRULY important.
