Interesting medal on coin minting (Baldwins/VCoins)

This one made me do a double take on VCoins today. Interesting subject matter.

  • That's an interesting design for sure. Do you feel it's worth the $1200+ pricetag?

Seems a bit steep to me but I have no experience in that numismatic area. I just thought the theme was intriguing. I doubt you would ever see a medal with a similar theme in the 21st century!

Very cool. Not $1,270 cool, but cool, nonetheless.

This exact medal recently sold at auction, but was apparently bought by the house since its price was less than the reserve.

Hi Jason2012 - welcome to the forum!

I wasn't the buyer, I simply posted a link to the medal because I thought it was interesting to share with the forum for some discussion. I never actually talked to the seller about the item so I don't know what happened to it.

Well, it's quite rare -- but then almost all medals are by definition rare. This would have been an advertising memento -- somewhat more enduring than a business card and more likely to be noticed. A European innovation, one designed for the Far East would be most unusual. Still, I'm not sure it would be worth the $700 reserve, but there's a strong and growing interest in China for antiques now that there is a lot more affluence there.

I was the buyer of this piece. Unfortunately, it has some corrosion not visible in the photo which is probably why it didn't sell at auction.

Do I owe worldcoinguy a finders fee? image

By the way, a NGC MS62 was sold for $1500 plus commission in a 2009 Champion HK auction with an estimate of $1500-$3000.
