question about topps vending cases

hi, i'm new to the forum and a former card collector during my teen years and want to get back into collecting(i'm 40 now). Ive got a question about topps vending cases. Lets say i buy a vending case of 1985 topps baseball and the first clemens i get is off centered from left to right, should i assume the rest of the clemens cards in this case are off centered left to right? I'm asking this because i recently bought a wax case of 1989 donruss and all 17 of my ken griffey jr's were off centered from top to bottom(every one was miss cut the same way) Are topps vending cases different? thanks in advance for any repliesimage

    Welcome to the boards.

Far as vending from my experience. I had 2 boxes of 1983 Topps from the same case and all the Boggs RC were OC but the all Gywnn and Sandbergs were not. From a different case I had 2 boxes Gywnn and Sanberg were OC and Boggs was not. This also seemed to be the same with 1984 Topps vending as well. I have not tried 1980-1982 or 1985-1989. I always assumed they would be the same as 83 and 84. Far as Rack Pack cases. I found that not all the same card is OC within the case. In the summer of 2007 I bought a 1984 Topps Rack Pack 6 box case. I busted the whole thing open and got 16 Mattingly RC. Only 2 were OC the other 14 were psa 9 and a couple psa 10. I also got a PSA 10 Pete Rose and many other 10s from that case. The cards were in incredible condition for being over 20+ years old.

If you busting open unopened stuff to submit to PSA then I would go after rack packs if possible. They yield the best results from my experience.

I busted a bunch of 89 Donruss looking for Griffey's over the years and they were OC a lot. that is the hardest of his rookies to get in nice condition if you ask me....if they were not OC the borders were often a mess...
  • I just busted 4 1983 Topps vending boxes. The centering was not the same for each card.I had one Sandberg that was miscut and 2 that were dead centered.I have no reason to believe that 1985 would be any different.

Not centering, but I busted an 86 vending case (in 86). Every Dale Murphy card had an identical crease.

I busted an entire '83 topps case from baseball card exchange a few months back and the centering was not consistent throughout. I'd get 3 or 4 left to right off centered boggs' and then get 2 or 3 nicely centered ones. The gwynns and sandbergs were centered better for the most part. I ended up subbing around 100 cards from the case and hit like 40 psa 10's, including 5 pop 1's and a sandberg, Ripken, and Jackson

Thank You for posting this. Seems that even within a sealed case, hit or miss box to box as far as centering goes.

Yes Eric they were all from the same case. All my Gwynns were dead centered also. The box that the Sandberg came from also had a few more miscut cards in it.

Any of you fools that busted all this '83 Topps want to sell me a set, minus the big RCs?

    Hi Mike

    Welcome to the boards.

I was wondering why you would bust a vending case of 85T? Are you gonna try to put a nice set together? The fun of going thru 12K cards? Just curious.

Anyway - good luck - I've found vending - in general - to be a crapshoot - condition and centering all over the place - but still fun.

Can someone explain to me the difference in the Grocery Rack and the Regular Rack? There appears, for example in 1981 Topps, to be 48 cards in the regular rack and 36 in the grocery rack.
Or, for another example, in 1982 51 for the regular rack and 36 again for the Grocery rack.
Despite the difference in the card number/amounts the prices are the same.
    What gives?

I am the least picky guy you could imagine.

ExMint to NM, sans stars is fine with me.

I have the bigs in NMish already.

    Hello, and welcome!

No offense, but what are you going to do with over 10,000 junk cards from the late eighties? Maybe you should buy a few 89 Donruss Griffey singles and call it good. I must say ripping through a wax case of anything is quite a blast and I'm sure you had fun with it! Hope you got them cheap! If Griffey is your quest, unopened 89 upper deck is not too pricey and more likely to result in a PSA 9 or 10. Good luck!

My experience with 81, 84, 85, and 86 vending cases has been what you get from one box is typical throughout the entire case. The same has held true with the cut card cases.

Good luck and welcome to the boards.

    Thanks,

hi, if i was going to buy i would be sending cards into PSA for grading and hope for a few 10's. there is a sealed vending case of 85 topps on ebay for $1,250 and after further consideration i'm going to pass on it. Interesting though someone had a sealed vending case of 1983 topps for $1,150 with free shipping but when i went back it was already sold with buy it now.

I would think you are wise to pass on it, especially if you are going to break it. At $1250 that is $50 and some change a box. You can buy from Steve at BBCEX for $35 a box. Thats a little over $800 for 24.

Grocery Racks are basically 3 cello packs within a rack pack

Rack Packs are without cello wrapping within the rack pack.

Rack Packs are the best imo.

Correct they are not over sized packs and are just wrapped in cello within the rack pack.

Plain rack packs the cards are loose and don't have cello wrapping within the rack. Cello usually damages corners on cards and that is why I never bothered with Grocery rack packs.

Also to the OP if you are submitting cards to PSA to make some $ in hopes for 10s. Then I would buy Rack Packs not vending. I believe the general consensus for highest possibility in pulling gem mint cards is in this order.

    Rack Pack
    Wax Pack
    Cello and Grocery
    Vending

From experience and from memory. I was lucky to get PSA 10s in general with 83 and 84 Topps.

    Vending 1 per box

    Cello 2-5 per box

    Wax 4-8 per box

    Rack 10-20 per box

I have had some good success with buying unopened factory sets and pulling really nice gradeable cards. My Bowman Griffey psa 10 came from a factory set along with my 1989 Fleer Griffey psa 10. They are really cheap to buy especially in bulk. Just a thought. Don't try 1989 Upper Deck though because Griffey is #1 and usually damaged.
