Condor vs. Jeton

I've been lurking here for a while, learning as I go. A thread recently referred to Jetons, which I learned a little about from the wikipedia definition. In that same thread, some here referred to collecting Condors. Alas, after five pages of Google search, the only condor referenced is the bird or variants thereof. I know that Mexico and Chile use the Condor in their design of their coins. Is this the reference to Condor collecting?

  • Try a search on "conder" tokens, that'll get you there.image

Named after James Conder, I believe...

  • Heres a link to the aforementioned gentlemans fine book , a free download and invaluable to collectors such as ourselves.

Thanks for the link, I didn't think to check Google Books for this one.

JamesMurray, not to get this thread off-topic, but can you tell me (to save me from having to do a detailed search), are there Conder tokens that were struck in silver or gold? I can't recall seeing any, but I'm not all that familiar with the series, either.
  • Ive seen English Silver ones , Ive yet to see a Scottish silver , i havnt seen a gold one at all. Im guessing because primarily they replaced small change so mostly farthings , halfpennys and pennys. Theres definately English silver ones though , i'll look out a link this evening , i'm being asked what the hold up is..sigh.. early evening grocery shopping..the joys

There are a number of Conder tokens that were struck in silver. They do show up frequently in major auctions. A few were also struck in gold but most were likely melted over the years. One did come up for auction in the last 2-3 years, which created quite a commotion.

Thanks all, I was never very good at reading, let alone spelling.

Don't feel bad. You've got lots of company in regards to that particular spelling. Even some bigtime dealers.

    PS-

Oh, yeah... it's nice to see you over here on the Darkside.

My coin collecting fantasies have gone from US to world, with a Latin America emphasis (I have two Chilean sons-in-law(. The US Coin Forum is a little too adversarial, and I have found some sane threads and advice on the "Darkside". I still check out both forums though. We do need some more contributors here, though, the threads don't move very fast here.

I collected u.s. coins for a few years, but at some point you start to feel like you are just seeing the same stuff over and over. I think that when I went to the local shows and saw how many Morgans are there at such a small show, it really puts into perspective just how many are out there overall. Same goes with Buffalo nickels, SLQ's, and so on. I like the broad variety and history of world/ancient coins. Heck, they're always posting stuff on here that I've never seen or heard of before.

Oh, and if you think it's a little slow over here on the darkside forum, check around at other sites. We're pretty busy compared with a lot of others. We just don't seem to have all of the contraversy and ego bumping that you see over on the other side.image

Welcome to the Darkside, in case no one has said it yet. And bring lots of pictures.image
