Sacramento ANA show

Dennis88Dennis88 Posts: 5,797 ✭✭✭
Since we don't have a zillion threads on the show (yet), I thought it would be time to make one myself.

Let's hope that it will be a good show with plenty of buying and selling going on. As I have seen it, most shows have been somewhat slow, especially when it comes to collector grade coins that are reasonably affordable (<$1000). The economy is very slow in recovering but I think we might see the turning point this or next year. Silver and gold will certainly play a role in that but nice affordable collector coins should be valued in no relation to the silver and gold prices as I see it. Especially raw collector coins are selling reasonably well during shows. It appears to me that some collectors are staying away from slabbed coins and do the old album sets again.

It seems that here in the Sacramento area few of the general public know about the show and I have heard from several dealers who are regulars at other ANA shows are not coming. Hopefully this will only have a minimum influence on the overall attendance.

Anyway, that's my extremely limited view on the market right now. I won't be at the show Wednesday during dealer set-up due to previous commitments but should be at table 1110 with Ponyexpress8 and MFH the rest of the show. I think it is diagonally across the aisle from our hosts.

Dennis, from what I hear, everyone is very excited about this show and feel it should be one of the best of the year! I know I'm certainly looking forward to it, especially since I will have my son Erik with me, who leaves for Italy for a year as soon as we return, so at least I'll get to spend some quality time with him during the show! I'm also looking forward to seeing new and old friends, as well as doing some more "Charmy-cam" reporting during and after the show.

I hope it's a great show. But based on the past history of these ANA "National Money" shows, if it is one of the year's best, we're probably in bad shape.image

Mark, by all accounts, the Spring Portland ANA a few years ago was one of the best spring ANA shows ever and one of the best shows that year. Also, the last Sacramento ANA several years ago had record attendance. Sacramento is known to be a very active coin town, and I think this show will confirm this.

  • I doubt that the show will be much of a success...the city does not provide enough attraction for anyone to attend outside of the Bay Area and is far too difficult to reach from anywhere east of the Rocky Mountains.
That on top of the goofy California tax laws make this show an easy one to miss.

Hoping to make it out for Saturday, but what a lame day to show up, picking up the dregs.

Then let me clarify, Mark: EVERYONE, and I mean EVERYONE I have spoken to about the Portland show said that was one of their best spring ANA shows. So, in my little world (however you want to interpret that image), it was "by all accounts."

The last time the spring ANA show was in Sacramento attendance records were set and so many people were in line to register on Sunday that some people were actually turned away. Of course that was a different time but it demonstrates that coin shows in Sacramento can be successful.

For this convention I know many Eastern dealers do not plan to attend but most West Coast dealers will. In terms of transportation, Sacramento isn't as easy to get to as the Bay Area but it is much more accessible than many of the other spring ANA cities.

I believe the level of success for this show can go either way. It could be one of the best spring ANA's ever or a complete bomb.

I'm with Mark on this one. The last Portland ANA show was decent but certainly not one of the best.

It makes no difference to me what folks think of this show as I, personally, am very excited about it and will definitely be there!

I might even bring Charmy a nice bottle of wine! image

To me I don't care what anyone else thinks either. It seems to be the last ANA anything to be in CA for a long time. Hec, 4 of the next 5 Summer ANAs are in Chicago from what I can tell (is that true or is the ANA website messed up?).

    Anyway, I'll be there Thursday...

Yes, that's true. There seems to be some logic but I'm not a big fan of it either.

Hey Neb.....have you ever been to Sacramento? I don't understand the advace negativity about the show.
  • Mustang, I've actually attended quite a few shows in Sacramento.
The issue is that it is not an easy city to fly into. Especially for people on the east coast. The lack of high-end restaurants that a major city can offer, relatively few top-quality hotels, and a lack of a real nightlife hurts the city as a convention sponsor. Unfortunately California is also the least tax-friendly state when it comes to out of town exhibitors. I love going to new cities and larger venues for shows and would have welcomed San Francisco once again. However, Sacramento is a bit too far off of the beaten path.

I know of several people who are flying to San Fran and riding to Sacramento. This is really inexcusable as a major show should be accessible via just one connection for everyone in the United States. Heck, even Omaha, Nebraska is easier to get to than Sacramento.

Can't argue the tax comments, sorry Sacramento can't accomidate your other needs.
  • illini420illini420 Posts: 11,467 ✭✭✭✭✭
Just spend over $1500 per transaction and you don't have to worry about the tax image

I've been to probably 100+ California shows in the past few years and can count on one hand the number of times a dealer as mentioned adding sales tax on a transaction under $1500 (previously $1000). Sure the other states treat the coin business better from a tax perspective than CA, but from what I've seen the CA laws seem to be ignored for the most part.

Anyways, looking forward to the show. Anytime there is an ANA show only one tank of gas away I'm there!!!!

Do You go to coin shows to look at coins or party after hours? image

As for flying into San Francisco and then driving to Sacramento? Oh jeez! Sacramento has a very nice Airport with simple access to downtown. Most flights connect through Denver International and I've never had a problem either coming or going from Sacramento to anyplace in the world.

I think if all the California politicians who have to travel back and forth from DC to Sacramento can do it without a bunch of whining (not wining since I'm sure that is probably quite prevalent on their flights!), then it must not be THAT inconvenient.... Just saying....image

I'm not sure why you people are saying that Sacramento is hard to fly into:

All major airlines (American, Delta, United, Alaska, US) have direct flights to their hubs and/or focus cities. It also is a focus city for Southwest (which accounts for 2/3rds of daily traffic). You can easily connect to Sacramento from any major and lots of smaller airports in the country.

Now, I do have to admit that it is an expensive airport to fly into. That is true. But that does no make it impossible or extremely difficult.

Lets not forget that there will be a FUN show and also a Longbeach Show "sometime" this year as well. Maybe you oughta blow Baltimore off for a little FUN?

I think its kinda weird that folks bellyache about governments spending money they don't have yet do everything possible to avoid paying sales taxes (which of course can be avoided if you spend over $1500) which is what, a GAE and a decent Morgan? Whatever.

I'm looking forward to a good show and the less whiners the better.

Coming to Sacramento for the ANA National Money Show? Bring an umbrella. Showers today and in the forecast ton and off hrough Saturday. About an hour ago I was in the lobby of the Grand Sheraton Hotel, next door to the Convention Center, and the Cleveland Cavaliers basketball team was checking. The Cavs play the Sacramento Kings tomorrow.

The Cavs versus the Kings...is that the battle of the NBA toilet or what? Division II basketball anyone?

For those who don't follow the NBA, that's the worst team in the league playing the second worst team in the league.

I just got into Sacramento - Ponyexpress8 and Dennis88 picked me up.

Its a long but easy flight from Ft Myers, FL - changed planes in Dallas

[ I had to walk all of two gates to catch the connection flight ! ]

Looking forward to the show - and seeing old friends.

Stop by Table 1110 to say hi to Glenn, Dennis and myself !!
