Even more remarkable is that three bidders were willing to pay at least $450 for the card!

Obviously more $$$ than brains! Was Charlie Sheen the buyer?? Good luck flippin' for profit! Even if retired in a set, like that will get $687.00 in ten years?? I think not . . .
I agree it's easily the best regular set of the 80s in terms of lower production, star power and aesthetics........ But, there is just soooooo much left out there unopened. I would say there are at least a thousand unopened cases worth in racks, wax and factory sets. Seriously, buy a factory set for $150, open it and send in the best 300. I'll bet at least 30 PSA 10's come back..... Heaven forbid one should be a lowpop!
A few months back I saw some PSA 10's from this set bringing close to $100 for commons. I went through my factory set to see how my cards looked. The centering on so many is off. I am not sugesting there is not a large number of unfound 10's but it is really hard to find one with centering that would be good enough to achieve that grade and I am sure there are certain cards that come out of the wrapper nearly the same everytime.
Searching on Terapeak over the past 90 days there have been 13 PSA 10 84 Donruss commons that have sold for $400 or more with the top selling for $800. That's only in 3 months of sales, so about 4 per month. It's not as uncommon as you guys think for these cards to bring big money.
I guess the blanket statement "all 80's cards are worthless" is not entirely accurate.
The biggest surprise to me is that a POP 6 would go for that much!!! I'll compare it to '78 Topps, which is the market I'm most familiar with. A POP 6 PSA 10 '78 Topps common will typically go for $30-$50. Is '84 Donruss THAT much harder to find in gem mint condition? Or is the set that much more popular?

I have been searching on EBAY for other 80's baseball sets and this one clearly takes the cake. I would think factory sets and wax would be going for more if you can pull a card that is a less then a buck that could sell for $700 in Gem Mint.
Who would have thought when you open a pack you are hoping to pull nice commons over a Don Mattingly or Cal Ripken.
Are you aware of any other sets from the 80's with big time registry demand from any sport?

The power of the registry still amazes me to this day. I try my hardest not to be slipping into it's trance...

This is a really nice looking set and would require a ton of effort to put together this many cards all in PSA 10.

Yes. At least among registry guys with deep pockets it is.
