New 1985 Topps Variation? Darryl Strawberry

For you error guys..............I am not sure if this is a known variation or not but I have had this since opening packs in 1985. It is the Darryl Strawberry #1 Draft Pick card. The reverse does not have the #1 and is just solid green. Back in 1985, I remember someone saying that each of the #1 Draft Pick cards can be found this way but this is the only one I have seen. I guess I am sending some of you guys to your common boxes........
Thanks,
Bob

  • I actually think "fake", anyone else ? I know the McGwire was faked in '85, and wasn't the Saberhagen ? I bet this could be too. Something just doesn't sit right with my on the font. Go back and forth between the two names on the top of the card. The two Darryl's dont look the same, and there is too much bleed in the Strawberry. The "w" is awful thick. The font of the narrative doesn't sit right either.

Bob, I just checked some of my '85 doubles and didn't find any missing the "1". The lightness/darkness of the green shades on the backs sure varied a lot. On some it was just difficult to see the "1", but they were all there.

I'll have to dig out my complete sets and check those sometime soon...

kind of an odd card to fake because it never really was worth that much even at his peak. The regular issue card never hit more than $5 and this was less. But then, some clowns actually faked 1986 Topps Boggs cards, so you never know......
  • The card is absolutely real and was available in packs. I don't know about all of the Draft Pick cards, but the Strawberry is a legitimate variation. Since the All Star cards were printed on the same sheet, it seems logical to conclude that the entire sheet could have this type of variation, but I have not seen any others. As I recall, it was a pretty well known variation at the time. I sold a pair on ebay about 6 months ago and got $5 for them.

    Correct.

Strawberry is the second or third card in the 1985 #1 Draft Picks subset that has shown up with this variation. Al Chambers has been noted in Dick Gilkeson's variation guide since 1990 or 1991. I may be wrong but I think I remember a Jeff Burroughs popping up for sale.

Also, I do recall your Strawberry, it's a shame it sold so low, these seem to be very rare actual design changes that Topps made, rather than printing anomalies.
