This is one of the most EPIC football matches ever....scoring...red cards...awful officiating...twists/turns...amazing

UEFA Screwed an English team again.
  • Van Pirse really has himself to blame ... the first shove in the face cost him the yellow, even if the second yellow was a bit dodgy.

But how you can you stop the incessant attack that Barca put on the goal ?

    Leonel Messi .... wow !

Hey, I'm a Chelsea fan so I'm not crying any tears for Arsenal...but I don't blame Robin at ALL for the first yellow. Adibal grabbed him by the throat 60 seconds earlier. There has to be retaliation for that. The UEFA officials love screwing English teams. They do it every year. Te second yellow was maybe the dumbest card I've ever seen in a match...and for it to be a second was totally reprehensible.

You're right about the Barca attack but that game is in overtime at WORST if Van Persie doesn't get sent off.

To borrow from a wise Ivorian, that officiating was a ******** disgrace! You don't send a guy off in the 55th minute or whatever it was for a play like that. There's no way you can argue Van Persie was intentionally trying to kill time. That just doesn't hold up.

That said, the best team clearly moved on. I don't see how anyone can hang with the Catalonians. They're just too good. To even have a shot against them you need all hands on deck, and with Walcott out Arsenal just didn't have a chance.
  • What was even worse for Arsenal fans, was watching them go at a pedestrian pace when all they needed was one goal - the away goals would have put them through. Instead, they get spitting up the ball.

But if you look at the ball possession 63 % Barcelona to 37 % Arsenal, there was no way you were going to stop Messi, Xavi, Iniesta and Co.

Van Pierse was the danger man for Arsenal - Fabregas might as well have put on a Spanish jersey.

We will see what happens tomorrow between Tottenham and AC Milan. THAT should be a battle !

Spurs will probably advance, but I think it's probably difficult to overestimate how much losing Bale is going to hurt them.

I still can't believe Cesc tried that goofy back-heel pass in front of the area. Of all players you'd think he would know better. Although, like you said- the telling statistic is time of possession. Even is Cesc doesn't screw that play up it's likely that Barca still moves on to the quarters.

Ooops- I didn't know that Bale is back in action. And it looks like Rafa is going to play as well.

It looks like DeFoe is going to ride the pine. I'm not sure I agree with that.
  • Yes Fabregas' failed backheel was the start of the downfall ... maybe he WANTS to be in a Barcelona jersey ?

Having Gareth Bale back will be great for Tottenham. Remember last season he tore Inter Milan "a new one" scoring a hat trick AT the San Siro Stadium in Italy.

Defeo score 2 goals on Saturday, but they were his first since January. I think Peter Crouch will be more dangerous in the air as Milan play it on the ground.

At least there will be no Gattuso to headbutt Joe Jordan ... he got a 4 game suspension. Although he did score the winner against Juventus over the weekend.

Gareth Bale rookie card is definitely on my want list.

Complete utter domination.................looked more like a 6-0 match.

time of possession means little in this sport. i mean obviously arsenal went to spain understanding that they would be doing alot of defending. tha said, this was a tie in which they could have easily advanced (this does not necessarily mean they are/were the better team). two mistakes cost arsenal the tie: fabregas' faux pas and van persie's ridiculous sending off. plain and simple.

sure arsenal were under constant pressure--name me a team in the world who would not have been given the opening leg result--but it is largely moot. history is filled with "inferior" teams who defend, defend, defend, and emerge victorious over two legs, often on the away goals rule.

having said that.....come on you spurs.image

That's very interesting. I've always assumed that T.O.P correlated very strongly to winning, but I confess it isn't something I've ever really looked in to.

Just to let you know, Dave, I'll be watching the Spurs/Milan game later tonight. If you email me the result before I get to watch it tonight I'm going to have to run up to Peterborough and kill you. Nothing personal, mind you, just a personal policy of mine.

And with that said: GO SPURS! My only regret is that that little pug Gatusso can't be on the field when Milan's Champion's League run ends.
  • Arsenal were going through at the time of Van Persie's inexcuseable sending off. The ref turned a great match into a joke.

I just saw the reply of that a bit ago. Is that REALLY that serious of an offense????? Players in the NBA, NFL, etc all extend the play well past the whistle on a regular basis.
