There's several vid's of coin comparators on youtube... they work ok. There are also a few vids of slot repair vids there too.

The one you referenced is wired for easy use. Here's a cheap set up using a unit like this:

There are some units that work great but are pretty expensive. Some people prefer using comparators that were used in old slot machines and the like. There was a company in Vegas that sold them for Bally slots etc. I had their number somewhere... if I run across it I'll send it your way.
