Hey Merc Crowd - Look Here - Proofs

Ok I admit it, I wouldn't know a mint state Mercury from an electric box punch out, but I do have a great (in my opinion) set of Mercury Proofs. Only missing the 37 in 67 to have a full set. Its listed as the Greg Samorajski set in the Registry. Like the typical Merc guy, I'm not smart enough to know how to set up a link to this post.

Does a set of proofs get me in the club so that I can pontificate, puff, and hoot with the best of you?image

    Greg:

You have made a common, yet profound error: Your proof dimes will surpass my set as soon as you find virtually any 1937 dime. The only way to overcome this severe faux paus is to send me my choice of your proof dimes. And, since I strongly suspect that all your dimes are magnificant , it might well be a while before I make a choice.

In the meantime, aren't proof Merc's pretty? I collected my set of proof Mercs as part of putting together a set of proofs from 1936 to 1942, but even from when I was a kid, I thought the proof Mercs were nicer than the proof buffalos and the proof walkers. I've thought at times that it would be a kick to upgrade a few of my proof dimes to 67. But the rest of the lousy (!) MS Merc collectors make me spend all my money on MS dimes simply to fall behind in the registry as slowly as possible. Was there any one dealer that supplied you with most of your 67s?

It's just the abject state of poverty I must now live in order to buy a Merc once in a while...man, it's getting to me!! If you guys would relax, I might be able to eat once in a while! It was hunger that made me refer to this fine group of noble individuals as "lousy".

More seriously, I just added an AU58 1917 to my Merc set. This was a coin I purchased as a kid, 35 or more years ago and just had slabbed. Eventually I'll replace it. But in the meanwhile I grin whenever I see it because it sure takes me back in time.

You bringing up the AU Merc also Brings back Memories. Once was trying to put a nice set of Au Mercs together but had to give up on it. Some of the Mercs are almost Impossible to Find in AU. It was Much more Frustrating than Collecting MS Coins.image

AU Merc's ought to be easy. As I suggested sometime ago to Braddick, simply buy a real nice MS coin--say, MS67FB. Then drop it in your pocket for a couple of months: Presto, you will have your AU coin! Then, when PCGS slabs your new coin, you will have "made" the coin in two senses of the word! Plus, I think this process is a lot like cooking with wine. Just as you want to use a nice wine when you cook with it, so too do you want to start with a real nice Merc when you "make" your AU.image

                Greg,

That's a great set of proof Merc's you've posted; the 1936 is especially impressive. I used to see 1937's in 67 come along with some degree of regularity, but less so over the past year.

Oh yes, the Merc is a bit smaller than the electrical box punchout, and it has a portrait of Liberty on it. It's a larger version of the head of Liberty that's on the Walking half dollar (supposedly the same model), except she has wings on her cap. Check out the similarities.

Welcome to the group. Maybe a mint state set will be next, hmmm???

Ok, now you guys have done it. This is so fun that I've decided to register my mint state Mercury Set, and its going to be good. Watch out over your shoulders.

I wouldn't expect anything less from you. Greg. I'm sure it will eventually be a top 5 set. Now, if we could just see pictures of your coins.............

                Bruce:

Actually I didn't buy any of the JB proofs so I'm not going to move up on that sale. The couple I looked at were not the blast white examples I am interested in. BTW do you have any dups I might like that you want to lose. A blast white 37 in PR67, or any blast white PR68 are on my list.

Do you have a view on proof Mercury valuation? It seems that prices have at least doubled over the past year on PR67 and PR68s. I'm sure the same is the case for the lower grades as well. I know the same is true for proof Walkers and Buffalos. Do you think the PR67 Mercs should still be bought, or are they a sell now. How about the PR68s. I see David Hall is pushing them as well, but I don't know much about his track record.

                Jim:

As much as I hate to admit it, I have no ability with a camera or scanner. I've spent several hours trying to scan some of my pieces with no real luck. My Lib Nickel images were done by the dealer who handled the transaction. Surprisingly, I was actually able to figure out how to transfer the images from the dealers site to PCGS. Not sure I remember how, but I was beaming at the time.

                  2. It seems you Merc guys have all the fun over there. You are tempting me to register
my proof set. I bought and sold a bunch of PR65/66 coins a 2-3 years ago, always
keeping the nicest examples for my set. The thing is, two of the coins are in NGC
holders...silly me, keeping the nicer coins even though they weren't PCGS slabbed.

Maybe I will crack out the whole lot and send them in...I think most of them would
                    upgrade from their present holders.

thanks for the thoughtful response mr.typetone...my take is that the pr67 have rune up pretty good so i sold my sets of those couple weeks ago and kept my pr68 set it is super and only the 36 is pr67..i feel these merc. in 68 are super rare and can still go up a lot..responing further about the walkers and buffalo's, there seems to be a population out there but are very tough to shake any loose especially the buffalo's..i tried hard and lost one at auction recently for 13k+ for the 1914 i believe..ive' kept my eyes open and do have the finest walker set but the buffalo's seem way tough..1 more thought..it seems the colors must be there to get the pcgs grade from pcgs..my 67 sets were all white but the pr68's are all colored..
