1941 UK coin question

My father-in-law was born in England and is turning 70 later this year. I was hoping to get him a nice UNC example of a British coin from his birth year of 1941. He doesn't collect coins. What do you recommend? Is the half-crown the largest coin from that year? Any suggestions on where to buy a nice example?

Thanks in advance for any help/suggestions.

  • No , the Crown is the largest , 50% silver. You should be able to pick up coins of that year very reasonably.
  • Half crown is the biggest for 1941. Ebay is likely your best bet. You should get an UNC for a few $.
  • Arrrghhh ... my database is incorrect , thanks for the correction Gazza

The shillings came in two varieties- an "English" reverse with an enthroned lion, and a "Scottish" reverse, with a rampant lion. That's if I remember them correctly. As they're only .500 silver, they should be fairly affordable.

A pair of those would be neat, but I agree that a larger coin would have the most visual impact, particularly to an older person who's not a coin collector. I've got a nice BU halfcrown of that type on BST right now, but alas, I am three years off, as it is a 1938. (Hm. That's MY father's birthyear.)

What about a mint set from that year?

That would be cool if it exists - especially in nice packaging - anyone know any more about it?

  • You may find a no Royal Mint set exists but how about something like this.

    1941

Hey, now there you go. That framed set is pretty nice looking. Generally speaking. I dunno about the price from a numismatic standpoint, but who cares about that- he's not a collector, right?

That looks about perfect, if I were the one wanting 1941 coin(s) for a Brit-born father-in-law.

I would be very cautious - these sets are frequently populated with polished coins. If that's not an issue, go for it.

His old dad-in-law probably won't care about a wee bit o' shine on the coins, and might even prefer that look. Plus, the frame looks classy, and it looks like there's an old stamp in there, too. Like I said, that might not make much sense to a numismatist, but to a noncollector it could be ideal.

Thanks for passing along the link to that framed set. It's a little more than I want to give him -- in terms of quantity of material. I was thinking just of something relatively small. (Knowing him, I don't think he would hang up something like that). But thanks for passing it along! image
