Anyone have any thoughts on this? Is this normal?

The reference to this page has been floating around youtube for a couple of days...

This is not the bullion version and refers to the 2010 uncirculated / burnished collector version of the silver eagle.

Yeah, there seems to be some widespread confusion over this.

There are two different types of uncirculated ASEs:

    1. Bullion variety produced in masses and distributed through authorized purchasers.
    2. Collector's variety featuring the W mintmark and sold directly from the US Mint (encapsulated, in Mint packaging).

(Note that there is also a proof version. In 2006, 07, and 08 there were all three options available.)

It is old news that the 2009 and 2010 W-unc collectors versions were not made. These were not made because they had to meet the demand for bullion.

We might see the unc. W versions return this year due to changes in Law.

I didn't think they were allowed to mint 2010 coins in the year 2011. Now if they already had them minted from 2010 of course they could sell them in 2011. I find the press release to be very weird unless they meant to say 2011 coins and not 2010 coins.

Derry, is this a new press release? The talk about 2010 in it made me think it was an old release that people have been digging up over the last few days.

It if is, in fact, new, maybe it is a typo. Still, I'd think the Mint would wait for a little more of the year go by before making a decision on the 2011s.

And the 2010 Coin Modernization Act does say...

"Produce collector proof and uncirculated Gold and Silver Eagles even if that cuts into the production of the bullion versions which the Mint is currently required to strike in quantities to meet demand."

That came out last fall, as they were announcing that they would be selling 2010-W Proof silver eagles but not the 2010-W "Burnished Uncirculated" single coins.
