Wow, it took me until my second viewing of this thread to notice that Stefanie's "Broadbottom" piece is overstruck on a Memorial cent. Not very observant, am I? That's one of the coolest uses of a cheap Lincoln cent I've seen. But what IS it, exactly?
I've had those Somalia elephants before, and the first coin in the OP is actually still here on my desk- it's going back to Asheville soon. Funny how I bought it from Aethelred in Asheville and it ends up going to Savoyspecial back in Asheville. I didn't know Greg had a pachydermous passion until yesterday. (BTW, I LOVE that ancient elephant!)
Great thread as I love these coins too! I just purchased a group of 12 1943 Belgian Congo 2 francs coins. They were all similar XF-AU coins and had sat in a collection for 30 years. IF I can get around to taking pics, I will post them.

i thought i mentioned this (via PM last night) but Stef got that one from me.......they are fantasy coins overstruck, obviously, on modern Lincoln cents.......a fellow named Tom Maringer makes them and his website is here
Excellent coins all, and completely besides the point I was reading a story tonight that mentioned the 74th and 78th Highlanders were awarded an Elephant badge as battle honors after their victory in the Second Mahratta War. Led by a certain Colonel who would later be known as the Duke of Wellington.
It's an interesting site if you have any interest in military history.
Isnt that the bees knees ? I didnt know either until JCH mentioned the link to the battle and how certain regiments were given the elephant as part of their regalia , made me wonder..knowing how the Monarchy love thier uniforms , sure enough it's on a lot of them. One to watch for is the first strike because they didn't get the elephants feet right and locals thought it looked more like a pig which is considered unclean in thier faith so that wouldnt do and they changed the design to more elephanty feet.
