I saw it - it was great. The one complaint I had was that all of the interviews with recruiters kind of had a "oh well" feel to all the shenanigans. I did walk away with the feeling that Marcus was a man-child who was far out of his element whenever he wasn't carrying the ball.

I highly recommend watching it. This, the Reggie Miller/Knicks one and the Pony Express ones were my favorites.

I saw the Dupree story awhile back and agree that it was a good one......and everything he went thru is probably being repeated somewhere right now

Wonder how different his life would have been had he stuck with the UT commitment.

One thing is for sure, he wouldn't have hurt his head against UT in the TX/OU game.

I saw the story when I was flying back from Vegas. I was impressed by Dupree's character and his willingness to work hard after his career had ended.

This was a great one. Pretty much all of the "30 For 30" episodes have been at least very good (the fantasy sports one was terrible, however) but this was toward the top of the list. "The Two Escobars", however, is in another class. It's just freaking great.

  • I think Lee Roy Selmon said this kid was the best running back ever coming out of high school.
His 248 yards in one half against the 2nd best running defense in the bowl game when he was a freshman meant
that the sky was the limit for this kid. Problem was that he went home to Mississippi and gained 10 lbs. after the season and
before the bowl, and he cramped up due to being out of shape. Switzer said he could have run for 400 yards that day. He
was that good. Switzer did a lot of damage here in how he handled Marcus, but Marcus should have listened to his mother and returned to OU to finish his career. The guy who stole his money is sad. Poor guy didn't have a father, and this "father figure" stole his money.
All in all a great story. If anyone missed it, be sure to watch it if you followed college football in the 80's.
Also, ESPN started up in 1983 ??? Marcus reached college fame in 1982, so not too many people heard about him unless you had
SI or followed Big 12 football.

You mean the Southwest Conference or Big 8.

I agree that nearly all of them have been great. For me, "the U" is #1, followed closely by the Two Escobars....then the Dupree story, June 17th, and Once Brothers. I forgot how good Petrovic was until I saw that.

He was briefly a wrestler in the mid-90s. Looks like he just started up his own group (Mid South Wrestling) in February and is wrestling again.

  • "Pony Exce$$" is my favorite by far...but Dupree and "The Birth of Big Air" and "June 17, 1994" were good too.

    Actually, they are all great.

Excellment story and it highlights how a small town boy adjusted (or lack of) to big time football in Oklahoma.
Marcus had an easy going personality that did not fit in with Barry Swtizer's idea of a starting D1 college
running back. Being homesick finally sent Marcus home.

As for talent, this guy was unreal.

Great story. After gaining something like 280 yards while playing half-assed in the Fiesta Bowl, I thought he was going to be a force in the NFL. Too bad he did not have good people around him to steer him in the right direction (big surprise, Barry Switzer was his college coach). In the end though, he is working hard and making an honest living, and seems happy -- which is better than others ended up, like Doug DuBose.
