When I'm looking for someone's rookie card, I like to get the parallels than for the regular card. For chrome cards, I like refractors, and when glossy or tiffany versions are available, I go for those.
I also like that they have fairly modest print runs (compared to other cards from that era).

Other than that, I like having deluxe versions of what can be somewhat drab base cards. As Rich writes, they just look more colorful and vibrant. I like cards from the Topps Traded sets for the same reason.

ohhh i LIKE that line! Can i use it?
when i was a kid in the 80s, im sure there were Tiffany sets available, but i'd never have the coin for them. i collected T/D/F and the T/F Traded/Update Sets that i could afford (ie. all but that damned 84FU)
