A Walker, A Buffalo and a Missouri -- which would you choose?

breakdownbreakdown Posts: 2,258 ✭✭✭✭✭
So instead of posting newps, I thought I would show images of three coins that cost me about the same amount. Which do you like best (if any) -- any reasons appreciated. I'll give my thoughts later. Thanks to Todd for the images:

Hmmmm, I've been to Buffalo and I've been to Missouri but I've never been to Walker.
    Yep, Walker it is!
Oh, I've fished on the Walker River in the Sierras but I don't recall a town of Walker. Been
to Walker Lake and fished there too, but I don't remember anything but a resort of sorts.

Kinda torn - I don't care for commens, so I can eliminate that one....the proof buff is rare, but realistically, it doesn't look much different than the biz strike issues - I paid $25 for for a near gem, well struck, toned type 1 buff last weekend. So I will vote for the walker, though the two substantial obv nicks would have precluded it from a 66, if not for the superb original surfaces.

Count me in with the Buffalo herd image I like the overall look & toning of that coin the best of the three.

Of the 3, I think the Buffalo has the most *neato* factor going for it... it is a first year of issue, classic design, type 1 variation, rare proof issue. For all these reasons, it is the coin of the 3 that I would want to own most.

The buffalo and MO are a tie for me and the Walker isn't far behind.
Maybe that's why you got all 3 image

    Ed
  • I would take the Buffalo. The Missouri looks AU to me ( I know I know its not but if it looks AU I would only pay AU money for it). Thw Walker is nice but the toning is a bit dark for me.
  • Buff. Strong for the grade to these tired eyes and with eye appeal and all those colors and surfaces...

    Best,

I collect both commemoratives and proof buffalos. That being said, I'd take the buff even if I still needed the Missouri.

Thanks for all the comments -- I think you can always learn a few things about your coins in such a thread. The Buffalo was a runaway favorite and I can't say I'm surprised (particularly based off these images). For what it's worth, my order would be :
    1. Buffalo
    2. Missouri
    3. Walker

I have all the Buffalo proofs but this one remains my favorite. The toning is a bit more subtle in hand but unique -- I've had it a couple of years and it remains one of my favorite Buffalos. The Missouri actually has great luster and Todd just could never quite capture it -- I think some coins just are not subject to accurate imaging and it is one of them. I realize that is a bit unfair since there is no way any of you could know that (unless I told you, of course). Finally, the Walker is a nice original piece but the toning mutes the luster a bit and there is a hit on the obverse that is a bit distracting. I think WalkerGuy nailed it that the grade is probably a bit maxed out on the coin. I wouldn't trade it for any 1918 I've seen, however.

Sorry about the giveaway, everyone, I forgot to post the rules at the beginning so I'll just have to keep them!image
