I buy this 1806/5 Bust Half on ebay and seller sends me a.....

Seller sends me a 1806/5 quarter. Given the quarter is worth about 2.5x the half, I'd have to call this a rip. Have you ever received a coin and its as exactly as pictured/described but the wrong denomination? Now the dumb part is that I didn't even realize it was a quarter until about 3 weeks after I received it!

    I once ordered a PR68DCAM 1970-S Kennedy Half ($70) and the seller sent me a PR69DCAM 1970-S Kennedy Half ($500).

The correct thing to do would be contact the seller, inform them of their error and return the coin requesting that the original order be satisfied IF they sent the WRONG coin.

However, if the seller inadvertantly listed the quarter as a half dollar and the coin pictured in the listing was in fact the coin you received, then you win! image

Did you inform the seller that you received a quarter and not a half dollar?
  • I had it happen when i bought a 1914 and was sent a 1913 which was worth a lot more dough. After thinking about it and wanting to continue doing business with a great seller i let him know. I'm glad i did as somewhere there was a guy raising 7 shades of heck having paid for a 13 and got my 14.
In the end everybody got the coin they paid for and no negs for the seller , life goes on as before.

I bought a NGC MS65 1934 Walker off eBay for just $109 last week. I wondered why I got it so cheap. Turns out the seller inverted the 3 and 4 in the listing - listed as a 1943 (I missed this completely). Pictures and descriptions were of a 1934. Next day I got a panicked email from the seller. He offered me $100 to cancel the sale. It was clearly an honest error so I cancelled the sale and would not take the $100 he had offered me.

I did once get a PCGS Morgan instead of an NGC Morgan. It was a common date. Seller had misplaced the one in the auction so he sent me a slightly nicer one. I was happy.

He may well have been fooled by the larger diameter of the quarter, compared to modern quarters, which is close to that of modern halves. Since neither one of you noticed it, I would say that you would be OK keeping it now.
That said, was it the coin in the pictures? With the 25 C. on it?

The coin in the auction was a half dollar? You are sure? If so, the seller is probably going nuts
wondering who he sent the quarter to. Contact him to be sure. If he's happy with the deal and
sent you the coin he meant to send then all's okay.

You mean you're not going to give him a neg or neutral for "Item Not As Described"? Based on another thread here, some people would.

edited to add... my mistake- the error was in your favor. No need to punish the guy further.

I had a lady come in to the shop the other day and had a Lg diameter capped bust quarter in the half slot. i corrected her and paid her accordingly for the quarter, quite a bit of money difference. However, I have to be honest and say in this situation on e-bay, i would probably have just kept it as a score.

I received the coin pictured.....unfortunately, the coin was so worn (PO01 candidate) there was no denomination visible....and as someone noted, the old large size quarters are closer to the size of a Half than a Quarter. So I fully believe the seller felt he had an 1806/5 Half and listed such......and so did I when I received the coin.....wasn't until some weeks later that I noticed it seemed small for a Half and that's when I discovered it was a quarter (in fact, just today). Clearly the seller didn't know what he had and the buyer (me) didn't know what he received....I only saw a PO01 gradeable 1806/5 ........ and I'm just a bit more embarrased about my "duh" moment in realizing what I actually had versus what I thought.....hopes this helps clarify my OP.

Maybe it was a divorce situation... his soon-to-be ex-wife got to keep half, so instead of sending you the Bust Half he HAD to send you a Bust Quarter? image

Since a raw Fair-2 1806/5 quarter just sold on fleaBay for $187, I wouldn't lose any sleep over getting one in Poor-1 cheap.

"No harm, no foul" only works when you get something better than expected. When it goes the other way, you holler "SNAD!", send the coin back and neg the guy.

At least, that's the way it appears to work, based on the responses I've read here over the years.

I bought a kiddie blow up pool at WalMart yesterday and when I got it home and opened the box there was no water in it.....the picture on the box clearly shows water in the pool. And no, I did not take it back, I broke down and supplied my own water.

Not even close to a rip....it was seller error and should be rectified.

I wouldn't be able to sleep if I considered this is a rip and kept the quarter. However, different people deal with things in different ways.........
    I'll come up with something.

if the seller thought it was a half because of size

and you got the item pictured, then that falls into the

seller don't know what they got so I might get a good deal category

especially since you didn't know what you got either image
