5 1 17606826 NEAR MINT-MINT 8 1969 TOPPS 260 REGGIE JACKSON Card US

Overall pretty happy, but how did the Seaver happen. Below is a scan of the card immediately before sending it in...

image

Since I do not have the cards in hand, I don't know what condition they are in now, but IF there was damage done in transit, how could it have been to only one of the 5? Not that I could prove it, but is there any precedent for cards damaged by PSA personnel, if that were even the case?

IMHO, for a card to grade out at a 2.5 it would have to look a whole lot worse on the front than this one does, regardless of what the back looks like (it looked fine but I didn't happen to scan it).

Thoughts???

Comments

  • Possible slight pinhole somewhere with paper loss? It seems like a 2.5 with a card that looks like that would have paper loss on it.
  • BTW, nice Reggie rookie.

I am guessing there is a few hairline creases that you cant see?
Nice Reggie rookie though did you happen to scan that one?

I believe that a surface wrinkle automatically bumps it down to a 5, but not sure about how this is a 2.5.

Also, I thought that a pinhole bumps it down to a 1.

Aside from the Rose and Seaver you did well. The Jackson 8 should make your day. I would just wait a few months and re-sub the Seaver card and see what happes. Any chance you can show a scan of the Rose card? Curious about that one. Thanks. Doug

Congratulations on the Jackson and Palmer. Trust me, I have had the same questions about a few I have sent in. This must have been a dump on Kaline day; I have never figured these two out.

I would try again on the Rose also, not sure about it getting a 8 though. Bottom corners may put it in the 6-7 range. Nice cards

I am not an expert on the card sizes but I would grade the Rose a PSA 6.

    Thanks for sharing your results.

It's because Kaline was a Tiger....Tigers get screwed in every way, especially for HOF voting. Trammell and Whitaker should be in, yet they get almost no votes??

I physically abused myself when I saw the grade pop on this one, I thought outside shot at 8.5, almost impossible in any grade to find, color and clarity unmatched on most in my set of 5/6 NOW there is a tiny crease on the back, I swear wasnt there, but since it is not really all that visible, chalking it up to my error, one of the nicest 3's on the planet..and if they had graded cards on Mars, it would be better than those too

edited- I have been very very displeased with grades in the last 3 subs I have sent, no rhyme or reason

Great eyes Mike! And if those ARE staple holes, are there also two more ... one above the "v" of his shirt and the other at the top part of his throat?

Congratulations! You've just been initiated into the PSA WTF Club!
  • There is no way to know if PSA did something, but most of the time we just miss a slight crease or a minute paper loss that they have better equipment to see. It happens to all of us, and yes, welcome to the WTF club!!!

That Jackson looks like alot of tilt for it being an '8'. Is that normal for '8's to have that much tilt?
  • itzagoneritzagoner Posts: 8,753 ✭✭
i've seen much worse than that in an 8 holder....that's a good looking Reggie, the scan shows every detail pretty well and it looks like it has a great surface and solid corners.

I've seen a LOT worse tilts in 8 slabs. That tilt one isn't very off-putting at all IMO; it's a great Reggie RC.

That's a pretty major tilt or diamond cut on that Seaver. Do you think that may have done it? Nice job on the rest!

It's pretty funny, but I've often wondered how PSA knows about those sort of things. There are so many cards where a PD is almost every card, or where something on the photo looks exactly like a PD; I always wonder how PSA gets those right. Maybe this is a case where they didn't, but I'm betting there is some surface damage that the OP just missed.

Yeah, I've graded specific Panini stickers which all have the same printing marks and was dinged on the final grade when subbing as singles.

The tilt is very common for this Seaver card. If you ever come across an 8 that doesn't have a noticeable tilt, buy it!

is that a tack hole on the top left corner!?

It looks like the Seaver had a staple at one time....look below his eye and then his cheek.....

Staple hole or tack hole is automatic 1...I think its paperloss like the back of the Jordan Bobby had in a PSA 8 case....Whatever happened to that card?

    Mystery solved...

Although I couldn't capture it on a scan, there were a few hairline creases running the entire length of the back of that card, but not visible at all on the front, at the level of the ump's chest protector. You have to turn the card at just the right angle in bright light to see it. Oh well...at least as a 2.5 this card is a 1/1!!!

But it was authentic...it was taken out of Ray Fosse's catcher's mask after the '70 All Star game!
