***New PCGS Designations for 2009 UHR $20 and 2010 5 Oz. Silver Coins***

GoldbullyGoldbully Posts: 17,910 ✭✭✭✭✭
Effective immediately, PCGS will recognize Prooflike (PL) designations for 2009 Ultra High Relief (UHR) $20 gold coins. Also, effective immediately, PCGS will recognize Prooflike (PL) and Deep Mirror Prooflike (DMPL) designations for 2010 5 oz. America the Beautiful coins. Many of these business strike coins were minted from highly polished dies and warrant special recognition. All submissions automatically qualify for these new designations without any additional fees.

You know, it sure would have been nice if I hadn't already spent over $1800 in grading fees on these ATB coins. Good move but I can't help but think they must have seen A LOT of business going across the street. Money talks, customers walk. I really doubt the UHR coins would get the PL designation if the bullion ATB sets were never minted.

This is somewhat maddening is it not? What does grading even mean if it is not consistent. Maybe there should be a year delay between coin release and grading so they can make up their mind.

And what about re-evaluation for PL on already holdered (First Strike esp.) coins with a 70?

Will they re-evaluate the 70's and FS70's, and esp. retain the FS on the re-eval?

I know it's a business, i get it. As such, maybe they should offer a "walk through PL designation" for free at coin shows. Bring in coins YOU paid to have graded and they take a look at it for free. If it is PL or DMPL, give you the option to get is reslabbed. Now, that's good business!

It's the 2008 bullion silver eagles all over again, no? Didn't it take them a few months before they would grade a 70. I think they said at the time they were concerned with spotting.

Anyway, it's good they are doing it now.

So I have an MS70 FS UHR (lucked out I guess). It'll cost less than $100 to try for the PL or DMPL designation. Is it worth it? What are the chances? Have any been graded as such yet?

That's the thing, they are giving PL ATS, but just announced it here.

    Will some go PL? Sure.

Finding them will be the thing.

I don't have an eye for this so I don;t really know what to expect. All I can say is that the coin really looks incredible. It's likely tho that ALL MS70's look incredible as well. Sending it in for regrade would be very much like taking that $100 and putting it into a slot machine... chances are you won't win, but if you do.... image

similar thing happened with the 20th anniversary ASE MS. They originally would only grade 69 tops, then said they would
start grading 70's. I sent 5 in for regrade and all came back still being 69.

It will be interesting to see what depth of clear mirrors the UHR will need to display for PCGS to designate it PL. I have one that looks to be PL but the way the UHR is made with it's curved fields it is difficult to determine with the distorted reflection. The price for a PCGS PL UHR MS70 FS will command moon money I expect so it might be worth a try submitting.
