Mint SUSPENDS minting of Sacagawea Dollars

I just heard a news story on the radio that the US Mint has suspended mintage of Sacagawea Dollars due to rising costs and oack of usage by the public. Will this be one of the shortest lived coins? Has anyone else heard this news?

  • Dennisl,

I haven't heard anything about this yet. If this happens, how much do you think the high end proof specimens will go for?

    Sincerely,

    Chris
I am waiting to restart my mint State Quarters Registry Set.
  • I haven't heard the story, but it sounds familiar.... can you say SBA (1979,1980,1981,1999) SAC (2000,2001,2002,2020?).

If they want the dollar coin to work, they have to eliminate the dollar bill (see how Canada did it).

  • I'm wondering if they will be made for mint sets only or is this going to be a year of no dollar coins at all.

  • I hadn't heard. I'm not surprised. Only relatively small numbers are needed to make change in vending machines. They would be really used a lot if they stopped printing dollar bills. We might even be able to support a $2 coin it that happened. Also it would save this country lots of money too because coins are cheaper to make than bills.

    Dennis and all,

I'd not heard the news either but did find this story linked from Coin Today. It is not definitive on the subject but one could certainly infer from the info it does have that we might not see any new Sac dollars for awhile.

It's on CNN.com also. Implies they will be made for numismatic sales. Doesn't break out mint sets, proof sets, or both though.

  • ABC national news ran the story today.....no more will be minted....except for collectors..would assume that would mean proofs only......get rid of the one dollar paper and the coin will work!!

Carl, I really agree with you. I would like to see the mint eliminate the $1 and $5 dollar bill, and replace them with coins. It save a ton of taxpayer money, and wouldn't be the least bit inconvenient. I think most of us use plastic or checks for anything over $20 most of the time anyway. I've heard many times that coins will eventually become obsolete, but I believe paper money is the most vulnerable. As we increasingly use electronic payment, coins remain convenient and quick for small purchases (gas, fast food, newspapers, etc.) but larger bills become almost completely inconvenient.

  • Carl, I also agree regarding the $1 and $2 coin. Canada did this right by eliminating the paper money.
I might even go along with a $5 and $10 coin.

I think that it actually costs more to make a coin than a bill, but the overall cost would be lower as the
coins last 25+ years, whereas a $1 bill only lasts 18 months.
