1876-CC Trade $1 Fake?

I am not an expert but I am pretty sure this coin is fake. The weird dots around the "America" are my first clue. It weighs 27.0

It is a very good fake and not far off from being very hard to tell but yes that is fake.

This appears to have the '76 Philly reverse with the missing serifs and all. But an added
mint mark by the counterfeiters.

It looks fake just from the dentils from 0 to 6 o' clock on both sides of the coin.

The missing dot after FINE is not a tell but I am super impressed with AUandAG, He nailed it for what it is-A Philly REV cast die fake with an added mint mark.

Did you just buy that off of EBay for 400$ ish? we talked about it on the board while it was going on.

Thanks for the compliment but do remember it's a CC (or purported to be one)!

I do believe that the 73 Philly has the same reverse problems with the broken serifs if
I remember, and the die may have been used in both 73 and 76. I have not compared
the broken serifs to see if they are identical. I'll leave that up to crypto79!

He just gave me a full refund and I havent even sent the coin back today. He must have not known it was fake.

Can you post a picture of the reeded edge? I have a 73-S that Pcgs gave a Questionable Authenticity that looks very real except the reeding. I would love to see the edge of that one.

Looking at the 'big picture' that the OP provided, is the lettering the key or could you tell it was fake from the eagle? I ask as the eagle looks pretty good, but the letter less o. The A in America seems a bit wobbly...

The shape of the mintmark is wrong...should be taller, move oval. Not so round.

Thanks for the edge picture. To me the edge looks right as well as 90% of the coin. If not for the extra metal around the word America,I might not have questioned the authenticity. It looks like it has been cleaned,but not the crude fakes of long ago.Scary

Best clue yet, it's underweight. Tolerances were .1 grams and the wear would not
account for the lack of weight....

Hey....beautiful coin!!!!!! Way fake!!!!!

Okay, contrary to other's opinions, this is not a Philly 1876 reverse.

Although some of the serifs are missing, it doesn't pass my test for a 76 Type I reverse.

- The NI in UNITED are complete on this coin and on a typical Type I 1876, these are incomplete
- The E in STATES is more complete than on a 76.

(PS: There is a Type I 1876 variety that all serifs are complete...but that is extremely rare).

This is not necessarily a new fake.
Some of the best-quality (most deceptive) fakes were made in the 1960s - like the Lebanese $2.50 and $5 Indian Head gold coins.
So I don't think this is part of some new wave of higher-quality fakes, just more of the same type of thing that has been going on for some time now.

You can't create luster by casting, not true luster that comes from metal flow during striking. Everytime I see one of these trade dollars with this much detail, yet no luster, it immediately raises a red flag.

Okay, I'll agree. It's not the broken serif of 1873 either as the F in OF is complete. So, what date did they
use? Confusing now, 'eh?
