Are those actual color images from an 1885 book? Weren't color photographic plates kind of scarce back then? And one wonders how they did a composite without the aid of modern computers. Must've been a lot of work, no?

Yes it was a lot of work to transfer multiple images to a single plate but was done on a regular basis back then. I wonder if there were hand colored plates?
