Colonial Experts: Did this sell for too much?

I would have thought this would be closer to a $50 to $75 item.

There are just so many die marriages of NJ colonial coppers- the majority of which are very scare to very rare- that one can't possibly establish a price without attributing the Maris variety first. Case in point: the NJ copper that sold for $105,000 on ebay a week or two ago.

This coin is a Wide Shield, so it could be a better variety. At the very least, it's a Red Book type variety, so that would increase interest.

    Hi VT Coins,

Well, you are right if that was a R-1 NJ die variety. This variety on EBAY was a Maris 21-O, which is considered a low R-5 die variety. It does carry a premium even in lower grade. As the grade for this variety increases, so does the premium. A choice VF example would be thousands of dollars.

rhedden and NewEnglandRarities, thank you for the quick responses.

A customer just brought a NJ copper into the shop, and when I saw the price that the other coin sold for on eBay, I had wondered if that price was for a common or better variety.
