Once in a lifetime oppurtunity

Got a call from my dealer today and he told me I needed to come in on my break. When I got there he explained that there is a doctor locally that has been buying coins from him since the 70's. Apparently the collection is over 1 Million dollars. Most of it is BU rolls and there are some odd balls thrown in. He wanted to give me first crack at all of the toners with just a slight premium. The whole collection will be in next week but he had a few of the things today. I am really excited to see everything because from what I hear there are a gang of Texas commems. Here is a 1950 D I got to pluck off the end of a roll.

It has luster for days..Excuse my poor photo taking.

LOL apparently you didn't read what I wrote. I consider it a once in a lifetime opportunity to cherry pick a 1 million dollar plus collection that has sat for decades. I might be sadly mistaken. If so I apologize for posting this thread.

I read that you took the dealer's valuation of the collection by the hook, line and sinker. There's an old adage that fits this hobby well: Believe half of what you see; none of what you don't.

i think what the replies thus far are saying is that if this dealer is setting you up to "Cherrypick" this $1 Million collection and all he has teased you with so far is a pretty AU-ish 1950-D Quarter that you may be over-reacting.

The Quarter is BU, I really am not to concerned with what anybody thinks the dealer is trying to do. He isnt like that and I am more the competent enough to know when a deal is good and bad.

How does a Washington quarter with rub over the cheekbone and hair curls behind the ear get to be BU?

I think what your seeing is due to my poor pictures. This date is notoriously poor struck. I am sorry if I have wasted your time with this thread as it appears you are quite perturbed right now.

From what I read, your only investment is your time. I say, congratulations and go for it. As long as you only buy what you wish, this is truly a great opportunity. So what if it only turns out to be a 100K collection. I would love the opportunity as I figure most would.
Best of luck and please continue to update us as it unfolds, especially with pics.

Hey, good luck and have fun! Sounds like a great time to me!

I actually know a few good dealers, even a couple here, and such a call from one of them would be exciting.

I noticed in this thread a couple of otherwise decent posters being real Ricardo Cabeza's. Really out of character. Must be smoething in the water...

I think it will be a great fun. Just enjoy what he shows you one thing at a time. I appreciate how excited you are. Things like this happen and someone is going to get the coins. This could be your turn. Keep your wits about you and enjoy, enjoy, enjoy.

I think that, for whatever reason, you're just being negative. And that's beside the fact that the 50-D Quarter could be uncirculated - we might be seeing poor imaging and/or white splotches on the coin, and not wear.

Either way, in your very first post you wrote:

"Your enthusiasm is apparently over exuberant. A 1950-D end of roll toned quarter is a once in a lifetime oppurtunity(sic) ? image"

It was obvious from Monstarcoins's opening post that his excitement was over a lot more than that single coin.
  • I like the color of that 50D!

  • Never mind the nay-sayers. You aren't being forced to buy anything, and it sounds like a nice opportunity to look over a large collection. Have fun, and let us know how it works out.

I love the chance to check out a big, old collection.
Don't pay any mind to those who down your enthusiasm. they are the same ones that if they were allowed to see what is in the drawers at the Smithsonian would probably say they've seen better.

The 1950-D WQ is a tough coin to find with attractive color since there were no US Mint Sets made that year. The coin also appears MS.

Hey guys, Monstarcoins may have a point which he did not overtly state.

This is NOT the time for Monstarcoins to get all picky with his dealer. If in fact, a huge collection is coming in soon, Monstarcoins has to stay real friendly with his dealer, even if it means buying an inexpensive coin or two that is just acceptable just to stay in the front of the line.

On the other hand Monstarcoins, some of the posters (including me at first) thought this 1950-D 25c was the BEST of the new huge collection coming in. Reaction on our part was puzzlement since it is difficult to get a solid read on its condition AU/UNC/BU/RUB/NO RUB/TONING/HAZE/No HAZE/BAG MARKS/NO BAG MARKS, etc etc.

Jon, the replacement photos in the OP certainly give a better perspective on your enthusiasm. And don't mistake my comments as negativity. A certain amount of cynicism is a healthy thing in this hobby when offered the "once in a lifetime opportunity" . I'm all for the possibility of Santa making your Christmas come early this year. I'm not in the habit of carrying a torch and pitchfork around here. Go for it, but make sure your antennae are up all the way.image

Hopefully this turns out well for you. But most B&M shops do not subscribe to the Santa Claus theory. If there is something good, expect it to be dearly priced, especially to the those who get to look first. But, if you are one of their very best long time customers, then I could understand while they might cut you a break. I'm sure they'd rather place as much of the stuff they can with clients rather than dealers where the stuff will never be seen again.

I've had 2 "once in a lifetime" opportunities to go over large seated collections before anyone else. I sort of wish I had a 2nd chance to do a better job on picking through those collections.
In one case I was fairly low on cash and the other I was just not primed on current market pricing for numerous better dates and varieties.

  • Well here is the deal with my dealer and pretty much all of the dealers in my area. They make 90% of their profits in Bullion. Gold doesn't last long in their shops. Other than that I think there is a couple handfuls of true blue coin collectors. I know the one dealer in the next town over puts any coins with numismatic value strait in his vault.I can think of 5 established dealers that are in there 60's-80's within 20 mins of me that have no idea about Registry sets, Full Bell Lines, how to price errors because there not on the grey sheet, How to price MS66 or higher because there not on the greysheet, etc etc. The dealer I work with closest, the dealer this thread pertains to has his SDB full of type coins. I am about the only one that enjoys toned coins. I cherry pick his BU Roosies albums when they come in for spot with exception of the 1949S. I think to be honest (because I have heard him say it a million times before) he only goes to work because it is fun for him. he has been in business since 1964. He has owned at one time or another just about every coin including in the early 1970's a 1913 nickel. He has never charged me extra for toning, he knows I love it and often sets them aside for me. He has really been my mentor ( im only 24) and I will be lost when he is done. For now I just enjoy how lucky I am.

The dealer friend will probably pick out what he wants before you see it. I would think that you
get the second shot. Hey, that's pretty dang good in my book!
Get up to date on what you want to spend and what you want to spend it on before going to look.
Keep a reserve for something unexpected as this collector may have just bought from more than
one dealer and your friend may not know everything! Whether it's a half million or two million
stick to what you can afford.
    Good luck!
