My contractor offered me a 1854-S proof $20 today.

Said he had bought it in Vegas in the early 1970's. Had been saving it for a rainy day.
His daughter needed some help with her home. He figured it was time to sell.
When he showed it to me, it looked like a nice proof with unusually frosty devices.
It felt light.....the reverse said "Copy".
Needless to say, he was disappointed. Even after I pointed out "Copy", he couldn't see it (failing eyesight).

Also it does say copy on it...

He had failing eyesight in the 70's?
He still a contractor with failing eyesight?

The HPA was passed in 1973.
Your other two questions have merit.
That said, these nice shiny "Proof" replicas only go back about 15 years or so.
Whatever.

That would be sweet, to own a coin that only the Smithsonian has another example of! Poor failing-eyesight contractor. :-(
By the way, he owns the company, he doesn't do the work (brick and stone).
<< <i>He claims he's into it for around $450 - perhaps he has good eyesight and was playing me for the chump??

Are you expanding on your castle? Putting up another tower? A moat?
I've been told I tolerate fools poorly...that may explain things if I have a problem with you. Current ebay items - Nothing at the moment
Hate to be negative but it sounds like your contractor got a cheap copy of an old coin and then tried to sell it for a few hundred bucks.Hope I am wrong but...

I had that same thought. As a successful contractor, he isn't stupid. He may have been "playing dumb like a fox".
