Movie Cards: Forrest Gump, Ernie Davis, Roger Maris, Shane Falco, Roy Hobbs & Billy Chapel Custo

1984 Topps (Tom Hanks as Forrest Gump) I photoshopped a picture from Forrest Gump to put him in a Saints jersey like he would have worn in "Gump and Co." the sequel to Forrest Gump.

    Niiice!

I'll bet that when you sat down to work on this card, you took a deep breath and said internally "clear the mechanism." image

Those are very nice. Did you actually make the cards or just the images?
  • Thanks for the compliments, everyone.

Nope. Chump's only at bat in the '84 series was a strikeout. image

Generally speaking, I don't print them out. I'm always disappointed by how fake they look when printed. That would go double for these since they have foil/autograph/jersey piece.

Screw Roger Clemens and his 7 shutouts in 1987.

Those are great, I really like the attention to detail in reconstructing his pitching career on the back of the Topps card. If I were to make one request to the card-artists on this board, it would be for "The Natural" - Roy Hobbs, NY Knights, in the style of '33 Goudey, '34-36 Diamond Stars and '41 Play Ball.
  • In all fairness, I got the stats from a blog by a guy who goes by the handle, Paulie Walnuts.

    http://lividsquid316.wordpress.com/2010/07/12/billy-chapels-career-statistics/

I initially made up my own fake stats, but his actually used details from the film to help create them. My original ones had similar career numbers, but his are far more "accurate."

I did make up a Roy Hobbs front based on 1940 Playball (the same year they based the card seen in the movie from). I have no way of knowing where he was born, so I just put Chicago. Does it say in the film? I haven't seen it in years. Also, I've never read the book.

Those Hobbs' cards are great, fellas, thanks for sharing your artistry!

Stadium78 -- You're right about Hobbs' birthplace being unspecified (it's a major theme of the film afterall) but it was pretty apparent that he grew up on a farm in the Midwest. How about: "Podunk, Indiana"?

Thanks again for your efforts, they're terrific!

I'd resubmit the Hobbs -- looks like at least an 8 to me image

    Nice work on these!

Since Chapel lead the league in Games (as you have it), shouldn't the stat actually be GS instead?

Yeah, I have the stats in the right spot, but the red italics should be over in the GS column instead. We'll just call it a UER.

I've updated the OP with Barry Pepper (Roger Maris) and Shane Falco. Instead of making a new thread, I'll put any sports film cards in this thread.
  • wow!! Nice job. I have a graded Roger Maris @ www.RCSportsCards.com
  • I updated the OP with an Ernie Davis custom.
  • Amazing, just amazing

    Here's what I know:

In 1923, a 19 year old pitcher, Roy Hobbs is granted a tryout by the Chicago Cubs and he is on the train to Chicago when it stops at the carnival and he strikes out The Whammer.....the story skips to 1939 for most of the film

    - so, born in 1904 is correct
    - born in Chicago is not, since he's on his way there

And to thank my 10th grade English teacher, I believe it should read: the Knights' full-time right fielder.
