Thought's on the 1936'd 3 legged buffalo... interesting note#

Recently, I came across my first 36'd 3 legged buffalo. I find it interesting that once the 37'd was discovered, somebody noticed that a similar look could be seen on the 36, even though on the 36 one can make out the 4th leg out a lot more than on the 37.

In studying the '36 I found it odd that the name 3 legged came into play as apposed to 7 legged. Why 7? take a look at the photo below of a pcgs vf20 that just sold at heritage.

It appears as if the buffalo was stamped at least 3 times- twice with the head going west and once going east. You can clearly make out a leg going backward in between the normal 4 seen on the buffalo, another going backward can be seen in front of the 1st leg, and the 7th can be seen going forward behind the 4th leg and appearing to head towards the rump.

Anyone else ever notice this?
may the fonz be with you...always...

    Hi Joe,
What you are seeing is part of the normal base the buff is standing on I believe.
Some coins are just plain "Interesting"

what you see as extra legs is detail on the mound which is present on all Buffalo Nickels. all that aside i have never understood this variety since it seems so very subtle and yet so expensive.
  • Huh?? The mound between the legs is on all buffalos, where are the extra legs>
  • Could you make the picture bigger please i can not see it very well-image
