Interpreting scattered light from a coin

I have a coin which exhibits a ton of luster and cartwheel, but when I try to image it,
the light comes back to the camera in a very scattered way and doesn't look very good.
In hand it looks exceptional.
Could cleaning "break" the luster and result in poor images while still exhibiting cartwheel?
Are there other reasons for what is happening?

HMMM... Does the coin have luster in hand? How many lights are you using? -Dan

You may want to tilt the coin so it is not exactly perpendicular to the lens of the camera. -Dan

The coin is nothing but luster and I've tilted it, twirled it, flipped it, frozen it, shot with sunlight, cloud and the fury of the gods.

    No go...

Lauren-try showing one of your pictures here. I'm sure there are enough experts here that can tell you what to do just by looking at your pic. Sorry to say I am not one of them.
