My Jackie Robinson customs — 1957 Topps added

Thought I would post all of my customs in one place instead of having them all in different posts.
I will add to this post as I add more customs.

    Jason,

Those pictures are out of control. Thanks for sharing. I will continue to follow this thread. image

Currently collecting 1934 Butterfinger, 1969 Nabisco, 1991 Topps Desert Shield (in PSA 9 or 10), and 1990 Donruss Learning Series (in PSA 10).
  • These cards are fantastic! They have a real authentic look.
  • The Red Man and Sports Illustrated cover are my favorites.
  • Thanks for the great comments! I am currently working on finishing up my 54 Red Heart. Still need to do a back for that one.

I am also working on a design for my Cut Autograph. I bought a really nice cut auto recently that is a great size. I thought I had a design I liked, but changed my mind recently. I am going to go the more vintage looking route now. I like the way the 54 Red Heart turned out with my hand coloring of the black and white photo, so i think I am going to use that same image on my cut auto card. Want to make sure it is a card i can live with and have no regrets.

The 1955 Bowman is my favorite.

So basically my kid won't be able to go to college, but at least I'll have a set where the three most expensive cards are of a player I despise ~ CDsNuts
  • Added a 1951 Topps Connie Mack's All-Stars. I won't be printing this one out, being a popup card. A little too difficult to get the perf to look right on a printed card. Still fit was fun to make.

What should I make next? I have a list of ideas:

    1948 Bowman
    1951 Bowman
    1952 Bowman
    1952 Weaties
    1953 Bowman
    1954 Bowman
    1954 Dan-Dee
    1954 Wilson Franks
    1957 Topps

Am I missing any good issues (1947-1957) ???
  • That 51 looks pretty sweet, although the idea that it "predicts" the year of his death is a little creepy. Any reason you didn't make it in the style of a regular player one (like the Yogi Berra as an example)?

    Regardless, it's very cool.

I'd vote for the Franks or Dan-Dee as the next coolest one to make.

I agree on the death date on the '51 C.M.

Great work!! My fave so far is the 55B, i just love that you made it a little off center like areal 55B would be. Good job!
  • Not sure how I Missed the fact that I was putting a date on this that would be after the release. Just an oversight! Thanks for pointing it out to me. I will fix it tomorrow.

I think I will do the 53 bowman next. I want to find a good image for it. I always loved the Peewee Reese jumping in the air over 2nd base turning the double play. Maybe I can find a good picture reminiscent of that.

    Thanks for the input!

    These are fantastic! Nice work!
  • Fixed the 51 Connie Mack. Thanks for the feedback on that one.

    -Jason
  • Added a few new customs from the 1953 Bowman set. I chose to do a "remake" greatest action card of all time (the 53 Bowman Peewee Reese) in the likeness of Jackie; and also a "regular version".

    Those are A+++++ fantastic
  • I wasn't entirely happy with my effort on the 53 Bowman "action" card, so i redid it in the style of the Peewee Reese. That Reese card is perhaps my all-time favorite card (wish I owned one) So this Jackie custom is my tribute to that great card. The best action card ever!

Great job on every one. I love the 53 Bowman in action. I am also partial to the Connie Mack All Star since I recently got an Alexander.

I've got one for you - try a 1986 Sportflics! image

I don't have to make one of those! That card exists!

    Jason--These are fantastic.

Jason . . . that '53B Robinson/Reese mashup is no doubt one of the finest concepts and executions of a vintage custom card that I have ever seen. Shabash!

And the '51 Major League All-Stars would have looked great coming out of a pack 60 years ago.

Wow! That is a great compliment, especially coming from you, who I consider to be one of the best custom card makers out there. Your work always serves as inspiration for me. Thanks for such a great comment!

  • It has been a while since I did any customs. I always wanted to do a 1957 Topps but Bob beat me to it. He did a great one with Jackie in a Giants uniform because of the trade. I wanted to do one in his Brooklyn uniform, but never found the right image until yesterday.

If you study the image closely, I pay tribute to another famous 1957 Topps card.

    Reverse neg like Aaron?

Exactly! I wanted to find a photo that I could do a reverse negative without it being completely obvious.
