Need help identifying 20 Sen Japan 1935?

Bought a group of coins today from the 1920-1945 period
Looks like a 20 Sen from Japan... Weight abt. 5 Grams...
Krause only shows 50 sen size???

Info would be appreciated...

Thanks! Larry

It is a 50 sen, you are right, that design does not come in a 20 sen. That's the five symbol above the 10 symbol above the sen symbol between the two hoo birds. It is also a Showa 11 or 1936, see the one symbol after the 10 symbol (plus sign) along the bottom of the second picture. That was back when things went right to left.

PS 4.95 grams of .720 silver and 23.5 mm diameter in my JDNA catalog. Not a rarity, with a mintage over 44 million and a 2000 yen value (around $24) in gem condition.

edited to add: an old-but-good link about dating/reading Japanese coins: Lion Coin Link. The right-to-left vs. left-to-right switch happened in 1948/Showa 23. Look for the 'nen' or year marker.

  • Thank you Cathy!

    Neat coin!
