Wow. . . . . drifted back 6 pages just for fun when I got back from Lincoln City and found this . . . . .
Was there as a dealer . . partnered with Bob White (Bradley's Coins, Portland). Great dealer and friend from waaaaaay back when he used to come down to SLC and I was a rube filling holes in Whitman's 20 years ago. He treated me a lot better than even my local dealers did and our relationship has come to a point where he is not only a dear friend, but he stays with us when he comes down for the SLC shows and I stay there and do Lincoln City and Florence in August.
OK . the guts of it . . . . .well organized, held in the Chinook Winds Casino and the locale is stunning. Beach (well, it is 27 degrees), eye-in-the-sky security at night, and SUPER show staff during the day. On the down side . . .absolutely NO ONE on Sunday, but great turnout Saturday from the public. Good dealer-to-dealer action Saturday, and then with a vacant room Sunday so most dealers headed out to cruise the bourse. About 25 tables. Sort of funny . . . this is my 3rd year and I know many of the guys well . . . and it is typical of most small shows. The same guys trade stuff back-and-forth. For me, it is fun. I am from Salt Lake so at least it is different material than the tired old 3-ring binders the same old geezers drag out at every Larry Miller show there (but guys, I am at least buying some good golf 'ball marks' every show).
Hot stuff? Key dates in circ shape. 1885 and 1886 Lib Nicks in G-VG . . . anything PCGS Type in any condition . . . 90% silver and circ Morgans (21s, others with dates and no holes, and then even VF-XF stuff) were flying back and forth. Everyone wanted to know about current silver and guys actually would buy a SINGLE Proof Ike from me, then shop it down the aisles looking for who would pay the best for 'melt' !! Yeah, it happened!
A couple 14-D lincs went in F-VF . . . more dealer-to-dealer . . . and more silver. Guys were there just moving silver with collector coins sometimes going AWOL. If you had 90% the transactions were more complex than figuring out the human genome sequence. One guy wanted Barber Dimes in AG-G . . . and then hit up another dealer to do the buy (who had a better relationship) and then came back to find out if his 'deal' had gone through. The point? Guys (and gals) were hawking silver with an edge of just a few cents in mind . . . wow!!!
Of course, on the way home on the flight to SLC I found silver had gone up another buck.
Personally, a great show. I sold multiple key date Morgans and a smattering of Type. Even Jeffs sold (to the consternation of Bob White) although they are supposedly the most "dead" series in Oregon. One dealer had most of a roll of 1931-S cents slabbed by PCGS. Several sold (they were 63RD, 64RB. and 64 RD). Several guys were looking for tokens (uh. why???), and the public was picking up modern proof sets, 64 Kennedys in slabbed shape and Barbers. Barbers (mainly halves) in any solid F-VF shape were sought after but not found.
OK . .got back a few hours ago, fed the doggies, and am now unpacking.
Great show. Really good people and although the show may not be advertised all that well and is in an obscure location, it is fun!
"My friends who see my collection sometimes ask what something costs. I tell them and they are in awe at my stupidity." (Baccaruda, 12/03).I find it hard to believe that he (Trump) rushed to some hotel to meet girls of loose morals, although ours are undoubtedly the best in the world. (Putin 1/17) Gone but not forgotten. IGWT, Speedy, Bear, BigE, HokieFore, John Burns, Russ, TahoeDale, Dahlonega, Astrorat, Stewart Blay, Oldhoopster, Broadstruck, Ricko, Big Moose, Cardinal.
Thanks for the report Drunner, I missed out again, Mother In Law arrived Saturday and I had a wisdom tooth pulled today. The tooth was the easy part. I have some of that obscure stuff I could have traded off. Even with 25 tables the times I have gone there was always something to pick up---------BigE
Doesn't surprise me about hot silver trading, everybody, up and down the Oregon coast at least, seems to think its going to hit 50.00 in March ----------------BigE
