PlastX...

BroadstruckBroadstruck Posts: 30,497 ✭✭✭✭✭
So we use PlastX for polishing coin slabs.

Yet I just wanted to state that I today for the first time actually used it for what it was made for.

Bought my kid Sis a used Lexus and the acrylic headlights had turned yellow brown with major cloudiness.

I was blown away at how well and fast PlastX restored them to crystal clear with little effort.

Yup, Meguiar's PlastX works very well, as do the Novus products.

Having used both I feel that Novus 1 & 2 is better for NGC slabs.

I'll have to give that a shot Sir Struck. Plastx is extremely time consuming and not very effective on NGC slabs. PCGS slabs are so much easier to polish.
  • Thanks for the tip, Broadstruck.

P.S. Do you wanna be MY big brother?

It has made it possible to see some of the coins in the scraped up slabs I've got lately.

    Thanks coindudeonebay image

PlastX works wonderfully on all PCGS slabs, but depending which era the NGC slab is I've noticed it leaves micro hairline scratches in some.

Novus will remove the hairlines in NGC slabs that PlastX leaves behind.

If you're doing a lot of slabs, just don't scrub too hard, too fast, for too long. I ended up with a blister on the tip of my index finger, which eventually calloused over, leaving me without much sense of touch there for a while, which caused me to drop a contact lens and almost lose it.

Plastic polish doesn't work well on NGC's (extra cost) scratch resistant slabs. It works fine on all the others, IMO.

I use PlastX on PCGS with little effort. But NGC is a different story. Where do you get the Novus product mentioned earlier?

Most acrylic shops sell Novus or just look on EBay under "Novus Polish" and "Novus Polish 1 2 3" as the best deals are the 2 oz bottles for all 3 types.

I've never used #3 before, but a 2 oz bottle of #2 has lasted me well over 5 years.

Novus #1 PLASTIC CLEANER & POLISH
    Novus #2 FINE SCRATCH REMOVER
    Novus #3 HEAVY SCRATCH REMOVER

#1 - Gently cleans all plastics without scratching. Leaves a lustrous shine that resists fogging, repels dust, and eliminates static.

#2 - Removes fine scratches haziness and abrasions from most plastics. Restores faded and discolored plastics.

#3 - Removes heavy scratches and abrasions from most acrylic surfaces. Use when damage is too severe to be restored with NOVUS #2 polish.

sometimes polishing compounds appear better or faster because there are more abrasives in the mix.
the application technique can greatly alter results.....so some users might have bad results and another person might have better results by using another method to apply the compound.
be careful not to use too much pressure or let heat build up.
    Have a nice day
