Do people really pay more for graded cards?

I have recently "inherited" a collection of sports memorabilia and was wondering if it was worth it to have the cards graded? I know it costs money to do, so how do you know which ones are worth paying to have graded? Do people really pay that much more for the graded cards? I see them on ebay and wonder why the price is so much higher. Any advise you can give me would be appreciated.

People will pay more for high end (nice condition) cards.
With cards condition is very important.
Of course we would need to know what cards you are talking about: years players and if they are rc's.

In older (pre 1975) cards that get a psa 7 can get decent $.
Psa 8 cards get far more than raw (not graded).
    Psa 9 get way more
    Psa 10 get tons more

After 1975 if cards cannot get at least a psa 8 then its probably not worth getting graded.
Maybe RC,'s might be. It all depends on what you have. Modern cards need to get a psa 9 or 10 to be worth it.

I am refering mostly to ebay auctions where people cannot hold and see the card first hand. If the card is graded then a 3rd party has deternined the
condition (grade) of the card. Most sellers of raw cards on ebay way overgrade so nobody believes them.

    So familiarize yourself with grading/condition.
Then you can see what the card sells for on ebay and then determine if grading is worthwhile.

  • If you have pre-75 stuff, you may do good depending on condition. If it's newer stuff, likely not.

Star cards are certainly worth having graded, especially Hall of Famers.
