What I learned today at the SLNA...

NO ONE sells Modern Coins... lesson learned, ALL Modern Coins are sold and are in HIGH demand!
Quality dealers work on small margins (3-10%)... this one really surprised me.
I'm too picky... or - all the high grade, eye-appealing coins are locked away in collections?
St. Louis is apparently a great coin town... I became very close and personal with some fellow collectors as I tried to navigate the aisles of the show. This was during the $35 early entry hours. I'm told tomorrow will be much more crowded... we'll see!
There are LOTS of Morgans, Large Cents, type coins, etc.; but very little bullion. However, if you collect notes (currency), you'll definitely want to visit this show.

Larry:
I am slow today, and confused.....what do you mean that "no one sells modern coins and that all modern coins are sold and in high demand"???
I have found, in my limited experience that many don't take the moderns (unless they are ultra high grade/value) but that they do sell them...they just have no desire to buy them.
You comment about quality dealers is spot on, from my experience, though I would change it to say ~5-15% margin.
From shows, in the last few years, I have seen very few eye appealing coins out for sale (they are on want lists and behind the counter for special customers) and when they are there, they are HIGH priced.
Sucks I can't be there
Enjoy and have fun!
I've been told I tolerate fools poorly...that may explain things if I have a problem with you. Current ebay items - Nothing at the moment
I give away money. I collect money.
I don’t love money . I do love the Lord God.
jsf: I just listed 4 moderns on the BST... that's all we have for sale. I didn't try to sell them at the SLNA; there were no modern dealers, it was a logical decision!
<< <i>gem commems were moving a bit it seemed >>
There wasn't much competion... that probably helped!
It was interesting to listen to currency collectors talk about coins... how much easier it is to grade currency then it is to grade coins, etc. Currency was very active today.
Edited to add: There were a lot of toned coins too. In contrast to my local show this past weekend, this show is probably 55% raw and 45% slabbed.
No surprise here.

<< <i>a lot of toned coins ? what kind ?? >>
Mostly Morgans... there were some other less colorful (maybe more natural?) toned coins too... you know, the ones with the brown toning.

There were a few Busties... one dealer had a case almost full of g-f busties of all denominations.

Mostly slabbed... there was a really attractive 81-s PC MS68 and there were the NGC wildly toned ones with that pedigree, which I can't remember.
I just picked up a 1938-D MS67 Buffalo with rose and golden hues that is actually a 1938-D/D and a 1937-D MS67 Oregon that is Blast White with a very small hit above one of the rays on the reverse that keeps it away from a 68.
The show is crowded, you have to wait to move, contort to view the display cases and yet, there are those collectors that spread their books, albums, etc., all over the glass so you have NO opportunity to see anything in the case... why?
