Heritage ... Just Auctions or Coin Dealer?

Hello folks,

I am relatively familiar with Heritage Auctions, but was curious as to whether they are also a large dealer that sells coins outside of auction format? I have read that they are one of the largest coin dealers in the country, but their website seems to only reference upcoming auctions they are holding? image

Thanks for any replies.

Their website lists coins for sale by other dealers, but usually at a markup to what you could find from those same sellers yourself.

Heritage also sells a bit from their own account. Their case is usually pretty empty at the Long Beach Expo. If they are one of the largest dealers in the country, I would suspect it is mainly wholesale business.

Heritage carries an inventory worth millions and they're one of the biggest buyers at shows. They are almost all wholesale. Next time at a show ask one of their numismatists to show you a box or two of direct sale coins.

I was recently pondering this issue. I suspect that the net margins in their direct sale business is much higher than their auction business, and I would be curious to know if their net revenue from sales is higher also.

Sometimes I see direct sale coins sprinkled in with auctions (unless you specifically select one particular auction).

About 3 times a year they do special dealer auctions of very large lots of coin "stuff". A lot might have 3 coins or 3,000 coins, and they usually have around 900 lots. They take sealed bids and the highest bid wins it at that bid price, none of that one increment up stuff.

Here is an example of a current lot; "US coins including (10) Indian Head Cents, (2) Lincoln Cents, (2) Liberty Head Nickels, (4) Buffalo Nickels and (33) Jefferson "War" Nickels. (Total: 51 Coins".

Obviously these lots have to be viewed in person, and it can take several days of tedious work looking at coins until your eyes cross.

  • Ive bought quite a bit direct from them at shows. Also their "slush" auctions are very very good places to pick up large lots of stuff. Heritage buys extensive collections from all over the country and the slush auction where the ac v nicks and ag to vf large cents etc go up for sale. No bullion etc just collector type material in lower grade than they would list on their site. A lot of slight problem material etc.

  • Don't they also have listings on eBay ?? I know I have seem some.

Heritage sells a lot on eBay and has over 23k feedback.
