Old vs. new grading

Does PSA grade tougher now vs. 10 years ago.

    Ok, I'll answer

    It's not that they grade tougher, it's just that they have more categories now, so it should be tougher for a card to fit into a higher category than before.
    Adding the half-grades, it not only recognizes cards that are "nice for the grade" as originally intended, for instance moving "really nice 8s" to 8.5 - it also brings down what would have been borderline 9s into 8.5 holders. I see many borderline 9s in old holders and I think today they'd likely get 8.5
    That's not to say there aren't really nice undergraded cards in old holders, there obviously are. And obviously there are still overgraded examples post-switch.
    But today's 9s seem a little more 9-worthy. My opinion, of course.
