It appears to have toning consistent with pieces taken from longterm storage in bank rolls, which is a type of toning that I like and that most other folks do not care for at all. The 1939 is truly a generic issue in higher grades. The pictures are overexposed and might be oversaturated, too. I would expect the coin to have a more subtle look in-hand. Grade might be anywhere from MS64 through MS67 depending upon the look in-hand and the blast left in the luster.

Agreed, I like the nice original look to that coin, the overexposed photo notwithstanding. Likely a Gem grade, but that photo makes it difficult with any certainty.

    Agree.
And while the pic is overexposed I am also seeing shadows which means the light is directional
and can hide a lot when shot that way.

Imagine a scratch on a coin going north to south like this l
If the light source comes from the left this scratch will look horrible as the right inside line of the scratch will stand out.
If the light source comes from the right this scratch will also look horrible as the left inside line of the scratch will stand out.
But if the light source is coming from either above or below, then both inside sides of the scratch will be similarly lighted and
the scratch can almost fade away in a pic.

Be careful of this "trick" some play when taking a coin pic.

Some coins are just plain "Interesting"

65 minimum- terrific coin- the 1939 can be well struck as reflected by your example

Yeah, I've been looking at a lot of Walkers lately, and this coin (and most 1939s) seems to have a good overall strike. There's a decent split between the thumb and the rest of the hand, the skirt lines are insanely distinct, the edges of the flag/drapery is clearly defined everywhere, and the eagle's breast feathers and the fore-leg are pretty defined.

Almost all of the 1940-47 dates seem to have a pretty flat eagle's leg and breast, and a less distinct skirt.

Here's the same date, same grading service, and same grade (with CAC sticker). I don't like this one though.

The photos look too washed out to give a potential buyer an idea of what it will look like in hand in my opinion.

when the page opened i thought "Proof" but it seems clear it isn't. i'm rowing the boat that TomB is in, the tone looks quite nice although i assume the coin is darker than it appears. the strike looks sharp to me, i really enjoy seeing fingers on Ms. Liberty instead of a flat spot.
  • boy, you can sure tell where those washed-out photos came from, can't ya'?

the 39 is one of the most well struck coins in the series ...and to add.. its said the the philly mint may have used proof dies for the business strikes after the proof run was complete.

My guess is this coin is graded higher than most are thinking (tough to tell from these images). I will say 66 and I am with Tom -- I like the speckled type of toning, particularly with the blue tint.

1939 was a good year for Walking Libs, many were saved uncirlculated by institutions pending the outcome of what was happening in Europe and we all know how that turned out.

The original images could very well be MS-66 I like the fact that the skirt lines and left thumb are well defined as are all the feathers on the reverse eagle.

    Pssst…if you show us it’s a 67 congrats!

Both coins pictured are in NGC MS66 holders with the second coin having a CAC sticker. I like the first one much more. I do not own it (in fact, I just got outbid on it on eBay image )
