Diamond cut - guess the grade! (free prize contest)

Definitely a very slight diamond cut, also has a noticeable tilt. Whoever guesses the correct PSA grade on this card first gets their choice of any 10 duplicate cards from my on-going USA Basketball live rip.

    8
  • PSA 9
  • Contest over. What POS 8 I just got.
  • I was gonna guess 9, but the super slight chipping at the bottom changed my mind, figured you'd get slapped for that and the cut.

I don't mind the tilt that much, especially since it's still decently centered in spite of that, but there should be a qualifier for diamond cut.

This card just doesn't have the eye appeal to be an 8 as far as I'm concerned. I can see it as a strong 7 or maybe 7.5, but it's not an 8.

    Agreed.
  • Yeah, I understand why it's an 8. Going by a strict interpretation of the grading standards, there's no flaw that prevents it from being an 8.

I just think it's a piss poor 8. Put it in a pile with nine other cards of the same grade, and it would be the worst looking of the 10 cards the vast majority of the time.

I know diamond cuts are rare, so this problem doesn't arise often, but they really need a (DC) qualifier.

CM - if ya have the time - could you rescan with the card flat in the holder - you have it tilted.

    Thanx.

  • I actually thought of that before I scanned it. I banged the right edge of the card up flush against the spacer inside the holder. In the scan above, the right edge is perfectly straight up and down. There are even a couple pixels on the very far edge of the card that are covered by the lip of the spacer. As it turns out, the left edge is also perfectly straight up and down because of the way I scanned it. The top and bottom edges are both diagonal and basically parallel to each other, which indicates a diamond cut.

Below is another scan. This one has the top edge flush up against the spacer inside the holder. Here, the top and bottom edges are perfectly straight, and the side edges are diagonal and parallel. The more I look at it, the more hideous it becomes. This is an effing disgusting card!

  • I've seen 9's with tilts worse than that
  • This card has both a tilt and diamond cut.
  • I wouldn't call it a strong 8, but 'disgusting' is a little harsh.

It's still not totally flat in the holder but the right side looks off.

The card made it into a holder - but it's fer sure a less desirable 8 for some.

    Mis-cut or trimmed?

Dude, are you not understanding what I've been saying? It can't ever be totally straight in the holder because it's a DIAMOND CUT! Get out your T ruler and look at how straight the top and bottom edges are in the most recent scan. They're absolutely perfect. It's the same as your Sutter card, just to a lesser degree.

Initially I thought this Murray card had a slight tilt in addition to the diamond cut, but on closer inspection, it does not.

Ok, ok, ok, I'll take it off your hands! I'll live w/ the diamond cut and I'll give you my 8oc in it's place. ;-)
