Greatest Cardinals?

I'm not a Cards fan, but was curious to hear what the consensus was on the great Cards players, especially in light of the Pujols situation. Here's my list, but I could have missed some.

(1) Stan Musial
(2) Albert Pujols
(3) Bob Gibson
(4) Rogers Hornsby

Lou Brock comes to mind...also, I know a lot of Cards fans that have a huge place in the franchise for Ted Simmons. Probably not in the "best player" category, but I would guess a top 5 in fan popularity.

Ozzie and Dizzy belong on the list. I would expect that Pujols will rank #1 by the time he retires.

With all due respect to Pujols, Stan Musial was the greatest Cardinal.

    1. Musial
    2. Hornsby
    3. El Hombre de humano sustantivo hormona

Hornsby was markedly more valuable than Gibson. #13 all-time in Win Shares ahead of DiMaggio and Mike Schmidt.

    Hornsby - career 127.8 WAR*
    Gibson - career 85.6 WAR*

    * wins above replacement

I'll leave that argument to the Cardinal fans. Both were/are terrific.

I might put Joe Medwick in there.

Sorry thought of one more, Pepper Martin.

    Other greats:

    Enos Slaughter
    Ted Simmons
    Curt Flood

Musial was the best. When I think of the best Cardinals player ever,
    he immediately comes to mind.

I'm only voting for Frankie Frisch because I have this cool picture of him. He spent 8 years with the Giants and the rest of his 19 with the Cardinals. He's probably not good enough for top 4 of course but looking at his stats, he only struck out more than 20 times in a season two times! That is amazing! That's the only reason I pick him near the top of the list. Doug

Red Schoendienst, Jack Buck and Mike Shannon all served and have been with the Cardinals for decades each one of them. Announcers aren't often thought of as part of the team though they are an integral part of the make up we see and hear when listening and viewing games.

A few favorites of mine not likely to make the list are Jack Clark, Ted Simmons & Lee Smith. I got to play basketball a few times with Lee Smith and Andy Van Slyke and as great athletes they could really hoop it up.

A sure top 5er would have been Steve Carlton. I'm sure it's wishful thinking but we may have an extra flag or two atop the stadium had he stuck around.

Two ex-Cardinals that I enjoyed watching the most are Jim Edmonds and Scott Rolen....they both played hard, old school ball players for sure.

Sad to see Carpenter retire, but he was a great one that should be honored in ballpark village. Will never be a HOFer but he pitched with a lot of guts and 2011 would not have happened without him.

Steve Carlton was a Philly and Roger Maris was a Yankee,

I agree with Stan at the top and Gibson would be close to the top. He dominated hitters.
