Reeded Edge 1977 Nickel??

Anyone ever run across a 1977 Nickel with a reeded edge? Got one back in change today....doesn't look like someone took the time to do it themselves, looks exactly like the edge of a quarter??

Any value?
Thanks!

No but a fella on one of these forums reported something like this about a year or so ago.
Turned out to be PMD. Pictures are definitely reeded..............I mean needed.
I decided to change calling the bathroom the John and renamed it the Jim. I feel so much better saying I went to the Jim this morning.

It's not an error - the odds are it's
    been caught in a rolling/counting
machine - the 'reeding' is probably
at an angle on the edge of the coin,
right, & not straight up and down like
    on a normal reeded edge?

It's an effect seen on off center, double
struck, and other error coins that are
too large to go thru the machine properly.

  • again sorry for the pics, but the more i look at it..the reeding looks perfect..the spacing is exact all the way around, there is no marring or nicks on the front or back on the nickel...not sure what to think!

Set your camera for macro mode (looks like a little flower) so we can focus better on the coin rather than your desktop.
  • I'll see what i can do on the pics....it is the exact same size as a regular nickel.....same weight as well....the front and back look exactly the same as well...no marks, nicks, etc.
    more pics to come

if you lean it against the desk calender, it might hold steady and get in focus. Put a regular nickel next to it.

Maybe a foreign planchet? Reeding looks too symmetrical and straight to be damage.

  • sorry..no new pics yet..i tried with my cheap camera and just can't get it good enough! A guy at work is going to take it home and try his luck with it.........so, more pics to come..sometime!! image

If it's the same weight as a normal nickel,
as stated, then it's a normal Jefferson 5C
that's had the 'reeding' added to it.

It can not be on a foreign planchet if it's
the same weight as a nickel. Also, please
remember that the Nickel Collar is plain,
not reeded - and no, it's not possible that
a reeded collar was placed in the Nickel
press - there is no such thing as a nickel
    sized reeded collar.

It's post minting damage, I'm sorry to say.

  • I have 7-8 pics of this nickel compared to another nickel.....if you don't mind please shoot me a PM with your email address (anyone interested) and I will send you the photos
    Thanks

A few years ago some nickels were reeded at a coin show (I think) as an aftermarket gimmick.
  • FredWeinbergFredWeinberg Posts: 5,923 ✭✭✭✭✭
That was in 1937, and it was
on BU 1937 Cents and Nickels.

    Certainly interesting, just a thought.

There are knurling tools that are used on lathes, chuck up a few nickels in between some centers and add the reeds. ~walaa~

Google "knurling tools" and you will see some examples of what I am speaking of.
