Just got back from the FCB Cardboard show in Atlanta...

Not as exciting as Burgundy's '52 Mantle but I did pick up a lot of nice stuff. Besides the really nice NM+ '72 set (better than described) that I picked up from board member pinkcatfish, I bought another '67 set (EX-EX/MT+), a '70 set (EX/MT-NM+), and a '74 set (EX/MT-NM). The show itself was just overwhelming. I hadn't been to a show in about 20 years and I had no idea just how many dealers would have nice vintage stuff to look at. Only having a few hours, it is just too much to look at if you don't have any real idea about what you are looking for, which I didn't. I looked at some '52's that I might go back and get tomorrow. In fact, the dealer may sell me a '52 set with a Mantle PSA 4, but I'll have to do some real research tonight.

If I had a lot more time I would have gone through a ton of high grade vintage but I just didn't have the time. I met board member mbmiller (Matt) who came over as I was talking to the dealer about the '52's. Nice guy. I also met Carol and talked to her for about 10 minutes or so. She is a really nice lady. Much nicer than when she's scolding me, lol.

Board member pinkcatfish (Jack) is also a really cool guy. We hung out for 30 minutes or so after our transaction waiting on the doors to open. Not only did he underestimate the condition of the set he sold me, but he included some of his extra '72 doubles including Aaron just for the hell of it.

All in all I had a good time and picked up some nice stuff but I wish I had alotted a little more time. Also, as overwhelming as it was for me, everyone I talked to said that the National was about 5 times bigger! Got to get to one of those.

I'll scan some of the cards later.

Good work brah. You must go to Chicago with all of us this summer.

  • I'll be in Chicago this summer. I can't wait!
  • Thanks Tommy - glad you like the 72 set - I left the show probably around 2ish and was still pretty busy. I did cough up the $$ to get Ryan's signature and there was also a long line for Jason Heyward. Definitely a lot of vintage to look at if you had the time. Been probably 10+ years since there was something this big in Atlanta. Met a fellow board member, made a great transaction and got an autograph I have been after for awhile - a good day.

Were there any racing cards there? I wanted to go but have to work Sunday.
  • Not sure about racing cards but I'll bet there were some there - there was one exhibitor that had a table full of autographed diecast cars with some other misc racing stuff as well. I do think the show could have been promoted more but hopefully the turn out was good enough for at least an annual show here.

I thought the selection at the show was great. Like I said, I've never seen so much vintage stuff in my life. Every dealer had stacks and stacks of Mantle's, Clemente's, etc....(albeit, most of them were overpriced although I didn't try to negotiate for any of it because I just didn't have time). The only thing I didn't see was any vintage unopened of any sport, although I doubt I would buy from anyone but BBCE. I think I am gonna buy that box of '72 OPC first series Steve has to rip sometime soon.
