Dental gold - valuation and selling questions

My neighbors father passed away - my neighbor is in his 60's. Any way the father was a dentist and while going through his stuff, they found a bunch of dental gold. They have no need for it and will sell it, how do I tell what the gold content is, I also understand that there is silver and platinum in it as well. So how do we value it? Where would they sell it and get a fair deal.
Thanks

Approximately how much weight do you have? If more than an ounce (gross) it would probably be worth having a refiner melt it. If less than that the fees will kill you, and you might as well sell it to a B&M that tells you they will buy dental gold.
<< <i>As stated elsewhere (do an advanced search for "dental") dental gold averages around 16kt, though there are occasional batches that are higher.

Not sure yet how much they have for quantity. They called earlier today and my wife took the call so I wnted to do some homework before advising. I am the default guy for advice on coins/precious metals. A quick google search gave the 16Kt. number, I guess that's where we start, I do like the refining option. He reloads ammo so my advice will be for him to weigh it first, and then see what the options are, I suspect its quite a bit, probably and old dentists lifetime quantity. Back in the day I don't think they could sell it easily. Knowing that there probably are also PT metal group metal content along with silver, gave me pause on valuation.
