Coin Club report 2/10/11 El Segundo, CA

Format of the meeting is pledge of allegiance, treasurer's report, announcements, show and tell, break, auction, raffle. Now that the meeting is shorter in time, the collectors spotlight segment has been cut, so there is no formal presentation or seminar time.

During the announcements, Walter Ostromecki mentioned that he is running for ANA Vice President. He also talked about an all day educational symposium on March 21 (Sat) in Long Beach, hosted by the California State Numismatic Association (CSNA). For those that have wondered about meetings without any coins for sale, well here it is, a full day of educational seminars and exhibits, no coins for sale. The flyer says free admission, $16 for lunch. Given the low attendance at the two Long Beach seminars I went to (6 people at silver dollar club, 1 person at the so-called dollar club meeting), I wonder how the attendance will be. Well, maybe I'll be surprised. The location is near the Long Beach airport, which is a bit out of the way for me, so I'll think about it.

At show and tell some highlights included a 5 kopek 18th century Russian copper, a 1922 gold certificate, a slabbed "hockey puck" (3 oz silver)--they are humongous in the slab, I brought my new slabbed 1930 Zeppelin coin, and another fellow showed off some CAC stickered slabbed gold. I mentioned the Huell Howser viewing dates (3/7 and 3/17) for the segments taped at the recent Long Beach show.

Forum member RobKool made an appearance, and invited folks to go to his club in Long Beach, where he is the secretary. The Long Beach club is also the host club at the big Long Beach shows.

I won a common $2 red seal during the auction. I didn't win any raffle prizes. The club raffle is getting tougher to buy prizes for with silver so high. 90% to 95% of the proceeds from tickets go to buy prizes, but that buys less and less in terms of interesting U. S. coins as silver goes up in price.

I missed the last three club meetings. The club secretary reported that there are now 50 paid members, which is more than double what it was five years ago.
