An early coin robbery, December 1845

It appears that Mr. Carpenter had a fair-sized collection. He is not mentioned by Q David Bowers in
his book on pre-Civil War numismatics, however. The clipping is from a Philadelphia newspaper of
December 15, 1845.

    Of course, some people feel that modern coins began in A.D. 1453, when the last remnant of the Roman Empire fell.
